Job Overview:

PLC Controls Technician (Programmable Logic Controller technician)

PLC technicians (Programmable Logic Controller technicians) install, program, maintain, and troubleshoot industrial control systems and automated machinery. They are essentially "puzzle solvers" in manufacturing and industrial settings, ensuring, for example, that assembly lines, robotics, and sensors operate efficiently to minimize downtime.

Core Responsibilities

  • PLC/HMI Development: Write, test, and debug PLC and HMI code (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Modicon) to ensure reliable machine operation.
  • Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnosing and fixing electrical and control system issues, including sensors, actuators, and motors.
  • Automation Design: Create control systems, electrical schematics, and panel layouts for new machinery.
  • Installation & Maintenance: Installing new automated equipment, performing regular maintenance on existing machines, and updating software.
  • Reading Schematics: Consulting electrical drawings, technical manuals, and blueprints to understand system design.
  • System Optimization: Working with operators to improve automation processes and enhance productivity. 
  • Documentation: Maintain technical manuals, software specifications, and validation documentation for regulatory compliance.


Essential Technical Skills

  • Schematic Fluency: Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams).
  • PLC & HMI Programming: Programming, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC software and Human Machine Interface screens. 
  • Calibration & Instrumentation: Experience using diagnostic tools like multimeters, oscilloscopes, and calibrators to test sensors, transducers, and valves.
  • Safety Protocols: Strong working knowledge of electrical safety compliance (e.g., OSHA, NEC).

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven experience (often 3-5+ years) as a control tech in industrial or commercial nvironments.
  • Specialized Domain Knowledge: Experience in industrial manufacturing controls.
  • IT/Network Literacy: Basic understanding of industrial networking protocols (BACnet, TCP/IP, Modbus).
  • High school diploma or equivalent; certification in electrical maintenance or completion of an apprenticeship is often preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
