JOB SUMMARY
The Paving Lead Person is a critical "working supervisor" role responsible for bridging the gap between management and field operations. This individual provides hands-on leadership to the paving crew, ensuring that asphalt installation projects are completed safely, on time, and to the highest quality standards. The Lead Person is expected to master the operation of heavy paving equipment while simultaneously coordinating the daily activities of crew members, monitoring safety compliance, and maintaining production efficiency.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Communicate standards of excellence in daily work assignments to ensure the team meets production goals outlined by management.
  • Provide input on employee performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions or commendations when necessary.
  • Aid in the training and cross-training of co-workers to ensure a versatile and skilled paving crew.
  • Function as a liaison between the crew and the Foreman or Plant Manager, exchanging information regularly regarding job progress and resource needs.
  • Operate various paving equipment autonomously, including pavers, rollers, skid steers, and backhoes, with a high degree of precision.
  • Inspect all mobile equipment for safety hazards, mechanical issues, and general functionality before and after shifts.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to ensure scheduled and unplanned repairs are completed to minimize downtime.
  • Assist in manual tasks such as raking, shoveling, and sweeping to ensure the paving surface meets grade and quality specifications.
  • Implement and apply all safety rules and procedures set forth by OSHA and Martin Marietta company policies.
  • Perform regular inspections for safety and "housekeeping" (cleanliness) in all areas of the operation.
  • Participate in or lead "Toolbox Talks" and plant safety committees to foster a culture of "Zero Incidents."
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks on the job site, ensuring all team members utilize proper PPE.
  • Complete daily production, safety, and maintenance reports accurately and timely.
