Job Overview:

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Packaging Line Mechanic II is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving packaging equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient production operations. This role performs preventive and corrective maintenance on packaging lines and related support equipment while ensuring compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), safety regulations, and company quality standards. The PLM II serves as a technical resource for equipment troubleshooting, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and assists in equipment installations and process enhancements.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on packaging equipment, production machinery, and facility support systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control system issues to minimize downtime and restore equipment to operational status.
  • Diagnose equipment failures using sound mechanical and electrical troubleshooting techniques and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Perform machine changeovers, adjustments, alignments, calibrations, and equipment setup to support production schedules.
  • Maintain and repair packaging equipment including fillers, cappers, labelers, cartoners, conveyors, case packers, palletizers, coding systems, and other automated packaging machinery.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, equipment manuals, and PLC diagnostics to support troubleshooting activities.
  • Utilize working knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment to assist in diagnosing machine faults and communicating issues with engineering or controls personnel.
  • Participate in equipment installation, commissioning, validation, and startup activities for new production equipment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, safety, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Complete preventative maintenance inspections and accurately document maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and parts usage within the maintenance management system.
  • Maintain tools, work areas, and equipment in a clean and organized condition in accordance with 5S and safety standards.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with cGMP requirements, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate equipment status, maintenance needs, and recurring issues to production, engineering, and management teams.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced mechanics and maintenance personnel.
  • Support production during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events, including occasional overtime or off-shift work as needed.
  • Demonstrate initiative by identifying maintenance opportunities and completing improvement projects when routine assignments are complete.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and equipment reliability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION:

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required. Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and related experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial maintenance experience with automated packaging or manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience maintaining packaging and process equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical drive, and conveyor systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written documentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, medical device, food, or other cGMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Technical certification or vocational training in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, electrical systems, or related field.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, TPM, or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Welding and machine shop experience.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Basic familiarity with PLC software for diagnostics.
  • Ability to navigate manufacturing software and equipment interfaces.
