Job Overview:

About Pierce, an Oshkosh company

At Pierce Manufacturing, we build trucks that protect people and communities around the world. To our team, there is no room for anything less than providing the absolute best. Since 1913, building truck bodies on Model T Ford chassis in an old converted church has evolved to creating highly customized, carefully designed and engineering pumpers, aerials, tankers and rescue units that have no equal. Today, you'll find more than 30,000 Pierce apparatuses on the road that are making a difference in people's lives, every day. To us, every step in the process of building our trucks is personal. From innovation and expertise, to the customization and service. Our trucks are designed to perform under the toughest conditions.

To support continued growth at our Pierce Florida facility, we have created a NEW Packaging Engineer position. We’re searching for a Packaging Engineer who thrives in a dynamic manufacturing environment and wants to influence material flow.

The Packaging Engineer will support and lead packaging projects to ensure effective delivery of products to internal customers while optimizing our internal and external supply chain. This role will progress our material flow strategy by enforcing our packaging standards and gaining cost reductions, product preservation, and team member safety through improving packaging.

YOUR IMPACT:

These duties are not meant to be all-inclusive, and other duties may be assigned.

  • Work with the operations team to develop packaging solutions for material presentation to manufacturing work centers, interplant material flow, and warehousing.

  • Work with various suppliers to develop the optimal packaging solutions for their products while ensuring all safety, quality, ergonomic, cost and material flow requirements are met.

  • Analyze and implement alternative packaging methods and keep current on industry standards and best practices.

  • Use various tools, pull engineering drawings for raw materials and record part dimensional data needed to make a container selection.

  • Review and approve various material flow and packaging change requests.

  • Research to lead and support implementation of new material handling solutions and other material flow changes that impact how parts are packaged.

  • Resource new packaging suppliers and lead the setup of new suppliers in our supplier data base.

  • Manage relationships with packaging suppliers.

  • Manage various day to day tactical issues that arise with suppliers, internal and external, and their use of returnable packaging.

  • Request quotes from packaging suppliers on various materials in support of both internal and external packaging and shipping processes for the purchasing of estimating current packaging cost of purchased parts.

  • Develop good relationships with internal customers and suppliers to improve the understanding of our packaging strategy and the tools and processes used to drive optimal packaging solutions.

  • Work with the Plan for Every Part (PFEP) team to implement reusable containers internally and externally in support of the overall PFEP strategy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Engineering Technology, Packaging Engineering or a related Engineering degree.

  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience.

STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant industry related certifications.

  • Packaging engineering experience within the manufacturing industry.

  • Experience with High-Mix/Low-Volume manufacturing

  • Experience with CAD or 3D modeling software such as CATIA or CREO.

  • Ability to perform measurement and metrology-based reverse engineering to design packaging solutions when CAD models, drawings, or complete product data are unavailable.

  • Experience capturing and interpreting physical product geometry and tolerances to ensure proper fit, protection, and space optimization in packaging designs.

  • Demonstrated skill using measurement tools and techniques (e.g., calipers, CMM, 3D scanning, physical mockups) to inform packaging design decisions and reduce development risk.

  • Proven capability to translate physical measurements into manufacturable packaging designs, minimizing rework, material waste, and product damage.

  • Strong time-management and prioritization skills, able to multi-task and prioritize competing requirements and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where requirements are constantly changing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The following represents general working conditions for this role. Specific conditions may vary depending on business needs and individual circumstances.
