Supervises the daily operations of the fabrication and welding departments to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production of ASME code pressure vessels, structural fabrications, and custom engineered products. Plans and coordinates work, assigns personnel, develops employees, and ensures production schedules, quality standards, and customer commitments are achieved.
Provides leadership for CNC machinists,welders, assemblers, fabricators, and support personnel while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork. Partners closely with Engineering, Quality, Production Control, and Plant Leadership to optimize workflow, maintain ASME compliance, and drive operational excellence.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Supervise daily fabrication and welding operations, including welders, fitters, fabricators, and support personnel.
- Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure production schedules, quality standards, and customer delivery commitments are achieved.
- Ensure fabrication activities comply with ASME Codes, Company quality standards, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and customer specifications.
- Verify welders maintain required qualifications in accordance with ASME Section IX.
- Partner with Engineering and Quality to resolve fabrication issues and support customer and regulatory audits.
- Promote compliance with OSHA regulations and Company safety policies.
- Monitor productivity, labor efficiency, scrap, rework, and throughput while implementing corrective actions.
- Lead daily production meetings and coordinate priorities with Planning, Engineering, Purchasing, and Quality.
- Coach, develop, evaluate, and hold employees accountable for performance and attendance.
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, corrective action, and succession planning.
- Ensure welding consumables, fixtures, tooling, and fabrication equipment are available and maintained.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives utilizing Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and root cause problem solving.
- Maintain production documentation and ensure compliance with the Quality Management System.
- Support customer visits, quality audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Provide schedule flexibility to support overtime and changing production requirements.
Qualifications
Education
Associate degree or technical diploma in Welding Technology, Fabrication, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
Experience
- Minimum five (5) years of fabrication or welding experience in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Minimum five (5) years of supervisory or lead experience.
- Experience with ASME code fabrication, pressure vessels, nuclear, or heavy industrial manufacturing strongly preferred.
Required Knowledge
- Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII and Section IX.
- Knowledge of WPS, PQRs, and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
- Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, blueprints, and engineering specifications.
- Knowledge of GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and SMAW welding processes.
- Understanding of quality systems and dimensional inspection.
