Job Overview:

The Plasma Technician operates CNC plasma cutting equipment to cut metal plate and sheet material according to engineering drawings, work instructions, and production requirements. This role is responsible for machine setup, program execution, quality verification, and routine equipment maintenance while ensuring safety, accuracy, and efficient material utilization in a machine shop environment. This position is considered safety-sensitive and requires employees to safely perform all essential job functions in accordance with Company policies and safety procedures.

Roles & Responsibilities 

  1. Set up and operate CNC plasma cutting equipment according to production schedules and work instructions. 
  2. Load material onto cutting tables and verify proper alignment and setup before operation. 
  3. Execute cutting programs and monitor machine performance throughout production runs. 
  4. Adjust machine settings and cutting parameters as needed to maintain cut quality and efficiency. 
  5. Troubleshoot minor operational or program issues and report major equipment concerns to leadership or maintenance. 
  6. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and production documentation. 
  7. Inspect cut parts to ensure dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards are met. 
  8. Identify and report material defects, quality concerns, or production issues promptly. 
  9. Maximize material utilization and minimize scrap through proper layout and machine operation. 
  10. Complete production and inspection documentation accurately. 
  11. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of plasma cutting equipment and work areas. 
  12. Inspect consumables, torches, tables, and machine components for wear or damage. 
  13. Ensure machines and tools remain in safe working condition. 
  14. Coordinate maintenance concerns or repair needs with supervisors or maintenance personnel. 
  15. Assist with material staging, loading, unloading, and movement within the production area. 
  16. Coordinate with production, warehouse, and supervisors regarding material requirements and workflow priorities. 
  17. Maintain organized workstations, material storage areas, and cutting tables. 
  18. Support production schedules by maintaining efficient machine operation and minimizing downtime.


Education and Experience

  • Previous experience operating CNC plasma cutting equipment or similar machining equipment preferred.
  • Experience reading engineering drawings and blueprints preferred.
  • Manufacturing or machine shop experience considered an asset.


Specific Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions.
  • Knowledge of metal cutting processes and material handling practices.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and manage production priorities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexible availability to support operational and production requirements.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods, including shifts of up to twelve (12) hours.
  • Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, twist, crawl, and reach overhead.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, platforms, trailers, and production equipment.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to fifty (50) pounds independently.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull heavier materials with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
  • Use hands, fingers, arms, and shoulders for repetitive gripping, grasping, pulling, pushing, and manipulation of tools and equipment.
