THE OPPORTUNITY
This primary function of a Multi-Craft Maintenance Mechanic is to provide 24-hour, 7 day a week "skilled trade" maintenance support to the manufacturing, research and development laboratories, warehouses, and office facilities that make up Abbott Park and its associated owned and leased lake County facilities. Maintenance department services include that of manufacturing equipment repair, electrical power equipment and distribution system upkeep, equipment and facilities preventive and predictive maintenance, refrigeration and HVAC system maintenance, lubrication services, environmental testing, heavy equipment rigging, pipe fitting, mechanical, general building maintenance and welding services.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Performs all types of mechanical maintenance work on a variety of equipment and systems including production and facility equipment located throughout Abbott.
- Work includes troubleshooting, ordering parts and installation of parts and material on various equipment such as centrifuges, compressors, gearboxes, blenders, dryers, fermenters, pumps, etc.
- May specialize on maintenance and repair of escalators, overhead doors, dock levelers, etc., along with other equipment related to either production or facility operations.
- Does preventive maintenance work on all plant equipment including air handlers, utility distribution equipment located throughout the plant.
- Will perform vibration analysis and balancing functions on rotating equipment.
- Work may be on new equipment or rearrangement and/or retrofitting of existing equipment and accessories.
- Will do light machining work on machine lathes and milling machines, etc., to make basic shafts and cut keyways, etc.
- Reviews construction plans and drawings to determine the appropriateness of design and conformance to Abbott Engineering Standards.
- Also makes material and labor cost estimates and material take-offs.
- Performs training and hands on work instruction for less experienced mechanics including members of the STEP program.
- In addition to work that may also be performed by STEP Mechanics and Mechanics, the Sr. Mechanic will work as a multi-skill tradesperson, doing electrical, pipefitting, building maintenance and/or other work on special assignments as requested by the supervisor.
- Assists in ensuring that GMP and safe work policies and procedures are followed and maintained at all times in accordance with established company policies.
- Is able to plan and prioritize workload to ensure positive productivity and excellent customer service.
- Orders materials and parts from the stockroom and initiates work orders, house requisitions, miscellaneous purchase requisitions and various other documents that may be required.
- Errors in judgment or failure to follow specific safety rules and procedures could result in serious injury to the tradesperson and others and/or cause significant equipment or property damage and/or loss of product.
- Accidentally energizing mechanical and/or electrical systems or equipment could have life or death implications.
- You’ll be accountable for meeting our compliance standards including FDA, OSHA and Abbott policies and procedures.
SHIFT
12-hour Night Shift, with a shift pay differential of 5% for any hours worked between 3:00pm - 7:00am
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma/GED, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience increasing job knowledge and responsibility in field of mechanics.
- As an alternative, must have completed all requirements of the Abbott STEP program for mechanics. This experience must indicate proficiency in all aspects of mechanical construction and maintenance work including the demonstrated ability to work well with others in a commercial and/or industrial work environment.
- Advanced understanding of all aspects of physics and mechanical theory and application to mechanical systems in a commercial and/or industrial environment.
- Expert in the use of all mechanics hand tools and wrenches, measuring devices, power tools including drills, hammer drills, saws-ails, etc.
- Proficient in the operation of shop equipment including drill presses, grinders, and lathes to perform all aspects of equipment installation and maintenance.
- Able to perform advanced troubleshooting and mechanical repairs and to install mechanical equipment and accessories according to Abbott Engineering Standards on an independent basis.
- Able to evaluate the use of various resources and make knowledgeable decisions regarding safety and company standards and policies.
- Understands all CHAMP functions that pertain to mechanical maintenance activities.
