Job Overview:

MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspection) is a testing method used on ferromagnetic materials (carbon steel, low‑alloy steel). By magnetizing the pipe and applying fine magnetic particles, defects disturb the magnetic field and become visible.

Core Responsibilities of an MPI Operator in a Pipe Yard

1. Pipe Inspection & Testing

  • Inspect OCTG, line pipe, casing, tubing, and drill pipe

  • Identify defects such as:- Cracks

    • Seams
    • Laps
    • Inclusions
    • Weld defects
  • Perform inspections on:- Pipe bodies

    • Couplings
    • Threaded ends
    • Weld seams

2. Equipment Setup & Operation

  • Operate MPI equipment, including:- Stationary or portable MPI yokes

    • Wet or dry particle systems
    • Fluorescent or visible particles
    • UV (black) lights for fluorescent MPI
  • Correctly select AC or DC magnetization depending on defect type and pipe spec

  • Ensure proper magnetizing current and particle application

3. Evaluation & Acceptance Criteria

  • Interpret indications and determine if they exceed allowable limits

  • Compare findings against:- API standards (e.g., API 5CT, API 5L)

    • Customer specifications
    • Company quality procedures
  • Classify pipe as acceptable, repairable, or reject

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Record inspection results accurately

  • Complete:- MPI reports

    • Inspection tags
    • Pipe tracking documentation
  • Maintain traceability for each inspected pipe joint

5. Safety & Compliance

  • Follow strict safety protocols, including:- PPE (eye protection, gloves, UV protection)

    • Safe handling of heavy pipe
    • Chemical handling for MPI fluids
  • Comply with quality and safety standards such as:- API

    • ASME
    • ASTM
    • Company HSE policies

Work Environment in a Pipe Yard

  • Outdoor and indoor inspection areas

  • Exposure to:- Heat, humidity, and weather

    • Oil, grease, and magnetic particles
  • Shift work is common (nights, weekends)

  • Interaction with:- Forklift/crane operators

    • Yard hands
    • QA/QC inspectors
    • Supervisors

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • MPI Level I or Level II certification (ASNT, ISO 9712, or equivalent)

  • Ability to read and understand:- Inspection procedures

    • Engineering drawings
    • API specifications
  • Good visual acuity and attention to detail

  • Basic math and reporting skills

  • Physical ability to work around heavy steel products

Why the Role Is Critical

An MPI Operator helps prevent:

  • Pipeline failures
  • Costly shutdowns
  • Environmental incidents
