Job Overview:

A Mold Maker is responsible for manufacturing, repairing, modifying, and maintaining precision tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes. This position combines advanced machining, toolmaking, fitting, assembly, and troubleshooting skills to support efficient production, improve product quality, and minimize equipment downtime.

Key Responsibilities:

Precision Tooling Fabrication

• Manufacture precision tooling, fixtures, jigs, gauges, and production aids from engineering drawings and CAD models.

• Machine components using CNC mills, lathes, grinders, Wire EDM, and manual equipment.

• Hold close tolerances, surface finish, and geometric requirements.

• Assemble tooling and verify proper fit and function before release to production.

Tool Repair & Preventive Maintenance

• Repair worn or damaged tooling, fixtures, molds, and machine components.

• Diagnose tooling failures and determine root causes.

• Perform preventive maintenance to extend tooling life.

• Document repairs and recommend replacement when necessary.

Fixture & Workholding Design Support

• Assist engineering with fixture and workholding design.

• Build custom fixtures to improve setup time and machining accuracy.

• Modify existing fixtures to support engineering changes and new products.

• Develop tooling solutions for prototype and production work.

Mold & Tooling Support

• Build and repair molds, inserts, and cavity components (if applicable).

• Support mold setup and production troubleshooting.

• Perform fitting, spotting, polishing, and assembly of mold components.

• Verify tooling alignment and functionality.

Key Responsibilities:

Production Support

• Troubleshoot tooling issues affecting production.

• Support CNC setup personnel during first-run and complex setups.

• Recommend tooling improvements to reduce cycle time and improve quality.

• Assist with prototype and first article production.

Quality Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models.

• Interpret and apply GD&T requirements.

• Verify dimensions using precision inspection equipment.

• Ensure all tooling meets design specifications before release.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED required.

• Completion of a Tool & Die, Tool Making, or Precision Machining apprenticeship or technical program preferred.

• 5–10+ years of experience in tool making, precision machining, mold making, or tool & die.

• Experience with CNC and manual machining equipment, fixture and workholding fabrication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Advanced blueprint reading.

• Strong GD&T interpretation.

• Expert knowledge of machining processes and cutting tools.

• Ability to hold tolerances to ±0.0002"–±0.001", depending on application.

• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

• Excellent attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple projects.
