Summary:

The Welder has primary responsibility of welding steel parts. Each job must be run with safety, accuracy, and timeliness in the welding area. The majority of this job will be supervisor directed and observed. All basic welding and machine maintenance is expected including changing rolls, wire, tips, liners etc. This position utilizes MIG welding.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to read basic shop prints and routers, including special instructions and priorities
  • Knowledge in setting up and operating gas-shield MIG welders to print specifications
  • Skilled in welding, patching, and flame straightening small weldments or plates
  • Knowledge of fit/finishing skills with the ability to hold +/- 1/32” shop tolerances
  • Knowledge of bolt, clamp, and tack-welding parts for secure positioning
  • Safe operation of oxy-fuel torches, including setting gauges, changing tips, and efficient burning
  • Use of hand tools, clamps, and grinders for various tasks
  • Ability to safely rig and move parts and weldments
  • Understanding of straight edges, tolerances, and flatness
  • Accurate paperwork handling, matching prints with parts, and performing visual inspections for quality and quantity
  • Ability to repair products by dismantling, reshaping, and reassembling parts using cutting torches, plasma cutters, and hand tools
  • Introduction to cost reduction, Lean Thinking, and 6S workplace organization
  • Perform basic maintenance on welding equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills and/or abilities:

 

Knowledge-

  1. LEAN Principles
  2. MIG Welding

 

Skills-

  1. Ability to apply basic math skills that include fractions/decimal equivalents
  2. Able to read tape measure to 1/32 of an inch
  3. Working knowledge of hand tools
  4. Can demonstrate safe use of overhead crane, jib crane, chain, sling and magnet rigging and lifting of remnants, half plates and full plates of different thicknesses
  5. Ability to manufacture small simple weldments to print tolerance and examples include sheet metal fabrication, repair work, small parts both hand built and fixture, and welding of smaller fitted weldments
  6. May help with inspection work of either measuring or pick up repair work

Education and/or Experience:   

  1. High school diploma or GED required
  2. 2+ years of welding experience preferred
  3. Vocational or Tech School degree or equivalent experience preferred
  4. Industrial Math (College experience or on the job training) preferred
  5. Print Reading for Welders (College experience or on the job training) preferred
  6. Oxy-acetylene and Shielded Metal Arc Lab (College experience or on the job training) preferred
