is currently seeking an experienced
Metal Finish Technician
for an automotive manufacturing facility in the Detroit area. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled automotive metal repair professional with experience producing high-quality Class A body panels.
Position Summary
The Metal Finish Technician is responsible for performing advanced metal finishing and precision repairs on automotive body panels without the use of body filler. This position plays a critical role in ensuring all finished products meet customer specifications and the highest quality standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and takes pride in producing exceptional craftsmanship.
Responsibilities
- Inspect automotive body panels and assemblies to identify damage and determine necessary repairs.
- Perform advanced metal straightening, dent removal, reshaping, sanding, and polishing on both steel and aluminum panels.
- Complete repairs using hammer-and-dolly techniques, shrinking methods, and welding when required.
- Produce high-quality finished panels without the use of body filler.
- Ensure all repairs meet customer quality standards and production requirements.
- Inspect completed work for accuracy, appearance, and structural integrity.
- Use hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment, and welding equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain accurate documentation of inspections and repairs.
- Communicate repair findings with production and quality teams.
- Assist with training and mentoring less experienced technicians.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all company safety policies, quality procedures, and work instructions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of
5 years
of automotive metal repair and finishing experience.
- Experience in a Tier I automotive manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Experience working with steel and aluminum body panels.
- Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP preferred) and Microsoft Office is a plus.
Required Skills
- Advanced knowledge of automotive metal finishing and repair techniques.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, MIG welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
- Strong understanding of OEM repair procedures and quality standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team environment.
- Leadership and mentoring abilities are a plus.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic.
- Flexibility to work various shifts and overtime as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and use hand tools throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels and changing temperatures.
- Must possess good vision, including close vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors.
- Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks.
