Position Summary
We have an immediate need for five Mechanical Tooling Designers to support automotive weld tooling and automation programs in Warren, Michigan.
This position will focus on the design and development of automotive Body-in-White tooling, weld fixtures and related automation equipment using CATIA V5.
Candidates should have at least five years of automotive weld-tooling design experience and be comfortable working independently on detailed tooling designs within a fast-paced automotive automation environment.
Previous Honda tooling or program experience is highly preferred, but not required.
Responsibilities
- Design automotive weld fixtures and automation tooling using CATIA V5
- Develop and modify 3D models, layouts and 2D manufacturing drawings
- Design tooling components including clamps, pin units, retractable pin units, slides, dumps and related fixture components
- Support Body-in-White resistance-weld and MIG-weld tooling applications
- Review customer specifications, weld data, GD&T and tooling requirements
- Evaluate tooling clearances, tolerances and weld-gun or MIG-torch access
- Review and validate 3D and 2D design packages prior to release
- Develop Bills of Material and related engineering documentation
- Identify design issues and recommend practical engineering solutions
- Support tooling modifications and design changes throughout the project
- Work with engineering, manufacturing, build and project teams to resolve tooling-related issues
- Support tooling release and engineering data-management requirements
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of automotive weld-tooling or automation mechanical design experience
- Strong CATIA experience, preferably CATIA V5
- Experience with Body-in-White or body-shop tooling
- Experience designing resistance-weld and/or MIG-weld fixtures
- Strong 3D modeling and 2D detailing skills
- Ability to design and modify custom tooling and fixtures with limited supervision
- Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerances and automotive tooling standards
- Ability to interpret customer specifications, weld files and engineering documentation
- Experience working within an automotive automation, tooling or machine-build environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Honda tooling or Honda program experience
- Familiarity with Honda tooling standards and specifications
- GEO fixture and tooling experience
- Framing, bodyside or subassembly tooling experience
