Job Overview:

Mechanical Technician – Battery Test Lab

An energy storage company is hiring three experienced mechanical technicians to build new battery test stands and safely decommission legacy equipment in its test lab.

About the role

Our client is moving to the next generation of its battery product. Its test lab needs skilled hands to build test stands for the new design and tear down the old ones, on a fast-moving schedule.

This is hands-on mechanical work: ducting, piping and plumbing for the systems that support a battery under test. We want people who know when to slow down for safety and how to move quickly once the path is clear.

What you'll do

Build and commission test stands

  • Assemble and install the mechanical systems on new battery test stands, including several auxiliary support systems.
  • Install and connect thermal management ducting and gas-handling/ventilation ducting.
  • Build and connect fluid piping for chemical (corrosive) liquids, choosing the right seals, fittings and compatible materials.
  • Work from drawings that are not always complete: figure out the build, identify parts needed and raise questions early.
  • Leak-check and pressure-test systems before handing them over for testing.

Decommission legacy equipment

  • Safely shut down, drain and disconnect older test stands, including systems that held hazardous fluids.
  • Support safe battery decommissioning following lab procedures.
  • Remove, label and stage hardware for reuse or proper disposal.

Work safely as a team

  • Follow safety procedures and PPE requirements every time; stop and escalate when something is unsafe or unclear.
  • Keep the work area organized and hazards controlled for everyone in the lab.
  • Coordinate with the test operations manager and engineers on priorities and blockers.
  • Document as-built changes and flag drawing issues to engineering.

What you bring

  • Several years of hands-on experience as a mechanical technician, pipefitter, plumber or similar trade.
  • Proven experience installing ducting and fluid piping/plumbing systems end to end.
  • Ability to build from incomplete drawings and work out the build path on your own.
  • A strong safety mindset: you follow procedures, wear PPE correctly and never cut corners.
  • Experience in industrial, lab, plant or other hazardous-material environments.
  • Skill with hand and power tools, fittings, seals and measuring tools.

Nice to have

  • Plumbers welcome: commercial or industrial plumbing experience translates directly to this role.
  • Experience with chemical or corrosive fluid systems (chemical plants, semiconductor fabs, water treatment, labs).
  • HVAC or sheet-metal ductwork installation.
  • Gas handling or ventilation system experience.
  • Test stand, test cell or lab equipment build-out and commissioning.
  • Battery, energy storage or EV industry experience.
  • Lockout/tagout, leak and pressure testing.
  • Plumbing or pipefitter license/apprenticeship, OSHA 10/30 or HAZWOPER.

Work environment

You'll work inside a battery test lab where corrosive chemicals and gas hazards are present, so PPE is required.

  • Standard PPE: hearing protection, chemical-resistant lab coat, safety goggles and gloves.
  • A full protective suit is required for some tasks.
  • On your feet for most of the shift, with bending, kneeling, reaching and work in tight spaces.
  • Lifting and carrying ducting, piping and hardware.

You should be proficient in:

  • Machine Building/Assembling
  • 120/208/240/480 Voltage Systems
  • Mechanical Testing
  • Conduit Bending
  • Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)
  • Advanced Inspection & Gauge Measurement
  • Aerial & Utility Equipment Systems
  • Automotive Manufacturing Systems
  • Aerospace Manufacturing
  • Blueprint Reading
  • fixture
