The Mechanical Design Engineer at RLWS designs, engineers and tests new/custom products according to customer specifications. Designs improvements to existing products. Develops Bills of Materials, drawings, engineering documentation and other items on designed products. Uses experience and knowledge with machining, metal forming, sheet metal fabrication, welding, casting, painting and plating in the development of products. May lead project teams and handles multiple projects. Ensures designs are focused toward reliable and cost-effective products. Works as a member of a team maintaining self-directed work in order to obtain the highest level of customer service, quality and efficiency. Aids in the manufacturing of products and oversees the installation processes. Assist with departmental activities including, working with customers, coordinates with outside vendors and reviewing manuals. Provides ongoing customer and departmental employee training.
Essential Job Functions & Tasks:
- Develops, engineers and designs products to customer specifications while following the New Product Development process, including new products, custom applications or other engineering projects as assigned.
- Builds and tests prototype models to prove concept or design. May also work on fixtures and other manufacturing related items toward designed products.
- Performs design control activities such as aiding in the identification of the design inputs, participating in design Reviews and product design generated records
- Contributes to the development of project schedules, reports on progress and assists in schedule adjustments. May assist with scheduling projects and coordinate resources to ensure projects are completed in a timely and organized manner.
- May lead product development team. Coordinate activities of subordinates and others within the department and coordinate projects with other departments.
- Works as a member of a team maintaining self-directed work in order to obtain the highest level of customer service, quality, and efficiency. Includes communicating with customers, sales, and marketing on new product ideas, collaborate on the establishment of new product and customized project specifications.
- Works in a multi-disciplined department involving the development of products for the process control and scale industries. Is directly involved with all aspects of the design, manufacture, and installation of design projects.
- Provides individual Bill of Materials, routings and other documentation required for the efficient manufacture of specific products and projects.
- Provides technical data to Marketing for technical manuals and sales literature. Ensures documents are technically correct and accurate.
- Completes documentation and implementation of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
- Assist with providing costing and feasibility quotes to sales employees when requested
- Assists in the establishment of design specifications & procedures.
- Performs analyses of technology, costs/benefits, and vendor capabilities.
- Supports validation activities in the manufacturing environment.
- Supports product designers in the development of new products.
- Assures compliance to all necessary housekeeping and safety, regulatory and company practices and policies.
Other Job Functions:
- Keeps up to date with new technologies which may be applicable to the scale industry; acts as a catalyst and technical resource for the implementation of new technologies
- Develops and delivers training programs to customers and Inside Sales employees, including determination training goals, developing course materials and teaching classes
- Travels to customer locations and other business functions in the performance of above essential job functions
- Selected person will have good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or five (5) or more years of equivalent experience
- Two (2) or more years industrial product design experience preferred
- Two (2) or more years of experience designing with some or all of the following materials: stainless steel, aluminum, tool steel, machined, thermoformed or injection molded plastics preferred
- Two (2) or more years of experience in 3D modeling (SolidWorks preferred)
