Essential Function: 

Designs and analyzes mechanical systems and manufacturing process equipment.  Creates/upgrades existing systems or equipment which consists of integrated purchased and custom designed components to provide safe, efficient, highly repeatable, reliable production processes. Performs the design and building of tools, material handling systems, and fixtures. Maintains documentation of designs through drawing revision control. Monitors and improves equipment safety, reliability, and performance. Contributes to the development of technical knowledge, supporting a culture of continuous improvement, active learning, and teamwork.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Designs and analyzes mechanical systems and manufacturing processing equipment  
  • Engineers systems/equipment which consists of purchased components and custom designed components that are integrated to provide safe, efficient, highly repeatable, reliable production processes
  • Performs the design and building of tools, material handling systems, and fixtures
  • Performs analyses using classical analysis techniques 
  • Originates new concepts and conducts feasibility studies and testing on new/modified design concepts
  • Develops and writes specifications, requirement documents, test plans and test procedures
  • Prepares detailed design, testing, and prototype fabrication documentation
  • Plans, schedules and executes development project plans
  • Develops and manages project schedules and is accountable for the performance of designed equipment
  • Design and create 3D models of mechanical components and assemblies using software such as AutoCAD Inventor
  • Create part and assembly drawings conforming to ASME Y14.100-2004 standard
  • Develop geometric tolerancing for drawings conforming to ASME Y14.5M-1994 and/or ASME Y14.5 – 2009 standards
  • Coordinate with outside suppliers and Silfex purchasing
  • Follow all company safety policies and report any unsafe conditions to Department Managers, and/or EHS Manager, 
  • Applies lean manufacturing concepts and 5S
  • Perform tasks/duties related to special projects or assignments
  • Perform other duties as assigned by department management
  • Develop and present technical presentations to external and internal audiences 

Qualifications: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or other closely related BS Engineering degree with 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Experience in generating requirements documents, specifications, test plans and test procedures
  • Experience using classical analyses techniques
  • Experience with mechanical modeling using AutoCAD inventor, SolidWorks, ProE, or NX
  • Familiar with Six Sigma quality methodology 
  • Solid working knowledge of mechanical, chemical or electrical disciplines
  • Strong written and oral communication, multi-tasking, and organizational skills
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Must be able to work effectively individually and in a team environment
  • Must be innovative and visionary in developing design options

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The noise level in the environment is moderate.
