SUMMARY
In this role, the Mechanical Design Engineer supports new equipment and replacement parts projects by developing practical, customer-focused engineering solutions. This role designs, plans, and supports the installation of mechanical and electromechanical products, equipment, and plant systems while maintaining engineering standards, supporting quality control, and ensuring deliverables are accurate, on schedule, and within budget.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Management:
• Plans for engineering programs, including activities, milestones, and support needs.
• Maintains project schedules, checklists, and budgets.
• Reports milestone status to internal teams and customers and adjusts schedules as needed.
• Collaborate with the engineering team on project details, lessons learned, and supporting
assignments.
• Takes ownership of assigned work and keeps deliverables moving forward.
Detailed Design:
• Reviews sketches, drawings, specifications, and engineering data to determine
procedures, objectives, and design solutions.
• Research existing designs and related challenges, builds on current designs, and develops new product solutions.
• Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards,
customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
• Confers with research and service personnel to clarify issues, resolve problems, and
develop innovative designs.
• Creates models and construction details for new or modified mechanical components and assemblies.
• Drafts detailed equipment drawings to support requested parts fabrication by machine shops and/or sheet metal shops.
• Provides support, review, and documentation quality control for the engineering team.
• Documents calculations and models to support, test, and verify designs.
• Applies software-based design and modeling methods to improve engineering
capabilities and product development.
• Develops, edits, and reviews bills of materials, and enters jobs, operations, and materials
into the ERP system.
• Develop installation, operation, and maintenance manuals for supplied equipment.
• Create installation and maintenance procedures and instructions.
• Maintains engineering files for all equipment as modifications or field changes are
recorded for serialized units.
Engineering Buyouts:
• Engages vendors to obtain detailed quotes for project deliverables.
• Prepares purchase requisitions for equipment, structural supports, and installation
components.
• Write specifications for engineered buyouts for projects, parts, and service needs.
Organizational Support
• Supports Sales, Research and Development, Production, Customer Service/Parts, and
other departments with engineering-related needs.
• Provides technical input on manufacturing methods, materials, properties, and process
limitations for long-range engineering planning.
• Works with the engineering team to continually update and document internal standards
and procedures.
• Provides support that may include travel to alternate production facilities and customer
locations.
Personal Development
• Maintains ongoing education, training, and professional development to support changing
project needs.
• Focuses development on current and emerging products and markets pursued by the
company.
• General development may include safety training, code standards, software and computer
modeling, communication, and technical writing.
**QUALIFICATIONS **
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Computer Skills:
Highly proficient with drafting and solid modeling software, including Autodesk
Inventor/Vault, and able to connect finished products, mathematical models, 3D
models, and 2D detail drawings.
Documentation Skills:
Documents engineering solutions and archives information to build institutional
knowledge.
Language Skills:
Reads and interprets technical documents; writes reports and correspondence;
presents effectively to customers and employees using current presentation tools.
Mathematical Skills:
Applies geometry, trigonometry, statistics, mechanical engineering models, and
practical calculations to engineering work.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid
conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in
mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete
variables.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The role includes office and field work.
Field work may involve moving mechanical parts, weather conditions, electrical hazards,
heights, fumes, chemicals, vibration, and loud noise requiring ear plugs and/or other personal protective equipment
