Title: Lead Design Engineer - Inertial Sensors

Are you an experienced and innovative Lead Design Engineer ready to shape the future of positioning, control, and automation products for the construction and mining industries?
What You Will Do
You will be responsible for developing concept and architecture designs for Inertial Sensors (IMUs) based on product requirements. This includes understanding product-level requirements and creating/managing mechanical requirements.
You will manage the implementation of new product designs from concept through large volume production. Your role will involve prototype design creation, collaborating with purchasing and suppliers for part development.
You will define and manage the Mechanical Bill of Materials (BOM) for products and identify Mechanical Special Product Characteristics (KCs). You'll also prepare and deliver design analysis reports including DFMEA, FEA, and tolerance stacks.
You will direct the validation and testing of new product designs, ensuring performance meets requirements. A key part of your role will be assuring the completion of thorough design reviews during the product design cycle using analytical tools, development testing, prototypes, and multi-disciplined teams. Finally, you will coordinate cross-functional teams, manage project deliverables, and conduct reviews.
What Skills & Experience You Should Bring
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Minimum 10 years of design experience.
Ability to lead projects, directing the activity of multiple support organizations and assuring timely completion of deliverables.
Ability to work independently and motivate others.
Ability to generate innovative and cost-effective design solutions.
Experience as a Mechanical Engineer in new product design and development.
Hands-on working experience in product areas like automotive, sensors (IMUs), etc..
Experience in design of injection molded, sheet metal, and cast metal components, with a general knowledge of the manufacturing process for each.
Experience with product design and development starting from research until warranty/end of life.
Ability to perform tear-down and benchmark studies.
Exposure to Mechanical digital simulation methods and tools (FEA, Moldflow, Structural, Thermal).
Experience with customer, supplier, validation, testing team coordination and interactions.
Experience in Change Management (product life cycle management).
Experience in using DFMEA to identify risk and systematic risk mitigation.
Ability to effectively prepare and deliver technical presentations to customers.
Preferred Skills
3D CAD experience - PTC Creo preferred.
Experience with troubleshooting mechanical failures in bolted joints, moisture ingress through seals and gaskets, and part and feature premature wear.
Familiarity with random vibration and shock concepts and incorporation of the concepts into dynamic simulation.
Data analysis and synthesizing specifications from field data.
Matlab experience helpful.
Prior experience designing products for functional safety.
About Your Location
This position is based in Dayton, OH. We operate under a flexible work arrangement (hybrid), where you will collaborate with your manager to establish a mutually agreeable schedule for your time in the office, typically 1-3 days per week, or 20%-60% of the month. This role primarily supports the CTCT division and involves collaborative work across teams.

The CTCT division, a joint venture between Trimble and Caterpillar, develops positioning, control, and automation products for earthmoving and paving machines in the construction and mining industries. We utilize technologies such as IMUs, GNSS, optical total stations, lasers, and sonics. These products are used in a range of applications where machine operators benefit from accurate horizontal and vertical guidance.
