Job Overview:

About the Role

We’re looking for aMechanical Design Engineerto take end-to-end ownership ofbehind-the-meter (BTM) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) enclosures. In this startup environment, you won’t just execute drawings—you’ll help define product architecture, make real design tradeoffs, and work hands-on with suppliers and manufacturing partners.

You’ll designindoor, outdoor, and portable enclosuresthat are safe, cost-effective, manufacturable, and compliant with industry codes, often with evolving requirements and ambitious timelines. What You’ll Do

Own the Enclosure System (End to End)

  • Architect and design BTM BESS enclosures from concept through production and field deployment

  • Design systems that integrate:- Battery modules and racks

    • Power electronics and control compartments
    • HVAC, airflow, ducting, and service access
  • Drive enclosure decisions across concept designs, prototypes, pilot builds, and production releases

  • Create scalable enclosure platforms that can be reused across multiple products

Hands-On Mechanical Design

  • Develop detailed3D CAD models and production drawingsfor:- Sheet metal parts, welded frames, and structural assemblies

    • Doors, gasketing, latching, cable routing, and mounting features
  • Rapidly iterate designs based on testing, supplier input, and field feedback

  • Perform tolerance stack-ups, packaging trade studies, and basic structural checks

Design for Manufacturing, Cost, and Deployment

  • ApplyDFM/DFAprinciples from the start

  • Simplify assemblies, reduce part count, and optimize build flow

  • Work directly with:- Sheet metal and fabrication vendors

    • Contract manufacturers and coating providers
  • Balance performance, cost, and lead time in every design decision

  • Support prototype builds, factory trials, and early customer deployments

Safety, Compliance, and Certification

  • Design enclosures to support compliance with:- UL 9540 / UL 9540A

    • UL 1973
    • NFPA 855
  • Incorporate features for:- Fire containment, gas venting, and pressure relief

    • Safe service access, grounding, and maintenance clearances
  • Support certification testing, test article builds, and design updates based on results

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with electrical, systems, thermal, firmware, manufacturing, and deployment teams
  • Translate ambiguous or evolving system requirements into robust mechanical designs
  • Support customers, installers, and field service with design improvements
  • Help establish mechanical standards, best practices, and documentation as the company scales

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

  • 4–8+ yearsof mechanical design experience (energy, industrial, EV, power electronics, or heavy equipment preferred)

  • Strong experience with:- Sheet metal and enclosure design

    • 3D CAD tools such asSolidWorks, Creo, NX, or equivalent
    • Production drawings, BOMs, and GD&T
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced environments with changing priorities and incomplete requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing enclosures forBESS, solar + storage, EV charging, UPS, or industrial power systems
  • Familiarity with:- NEMA / IP ratings and outdoor environmental requirements- Thermal system integration (HVAC units, fans, heat exchangers)- Corrosion protection and coatings (powder coat, e-coat, stainless steel, aluminum)- UL or IEC certification processes
