JOB TITLE: Mechanical Automation Designer
REPORTS TO: Automation Manager
FLSA: Non-exempt
JOB SUMMARY: This role designs and implements automation systems to meet the needs of our internal and external customers. Responsibilities include planning, designing, troubleshooting and improving production and innovation automation systems. This role also evaluates, recommends, integrates and implements equipment built or purchased for production or innovation. Other responsibilities include creating training materials, mentoring and training others, supporting production processes, and solving problems as a part of multifunctional teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs components and subsystems; modifies mechanical designs and prints.
- Designs and builds systems for testing concepts in development environment.
- Troubleshoots mechanical design problems during commissioning.
- Is proficient in CAD, details prints for manufacturing, concurrently work on assemblies with others.
- Understands and follows CAD file naming and management system; maintains organized and standardized file structure.
- Applies tolerances to meet requirements of application.
- Manages new equipment projects from design through build.
- Works with multi-disciplinary teams to solve problems and complete projects.
- Remains objective when evaluating multiple options, including own ideas; creates checklists.
- Provides accurate cost and time estimates.
- Understands function of mold and molding press components; understands molding process sequences and how they are measured and controlled.
- Provides on-the-job training for others; works autonomously.
- Performs other duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Education/Experience. High school education coursework or GED required. Undergraduate degree in Automation / Electrical / Mechanical Engineering preferred. Two-year technical or associates degree in engineering technology, tool & die, or computer-aided design preferred. Two years relevant experience in designing or building molds or automated equipment preferred.
- Computer Skills. Ability to operate personal computer. Ability to learn software required to perform job functions (i.e. PLC, HMI, camera, AutoCAD, and Solid Works software). Experience with Microsoft Office Products required.
- Language Skills. Proven written and oral communication skills necessary. Ability to read, comprehend, and utilize instructions and short correspondence with professionals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees.
- Mathematical Skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratios, percent and use trigonometry. Ability to read and understand complicated designs and drawings.
- Reasoning Ability. Ability to solve technical issues and deal with a number of variables. Ability to follow and interpret verbal and written instructions.
- Other Skills and Abilities. Willingness to attend conferences or training to enhance and update knowledge and skills. Occasional travel may be requested for company business. Overtime may be required to meet work demands.
- Supervisory Responsibilities. Mentor and train employees learning automation techniques. Ability to direct work task to others if you are assigned the lead role in a project.
- Physical Demands. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to sit and stand. Frequent movement throughout the facility is required. Dexterity to perform computer operations and close vision acuity necessary. May be required to move or transport up to 55 lbs.
- Work Environment. The duties of this job are executed in a climate-controlled environment with few temperature or humidity extremes. Noise levels will vary from very low to moderate depending on the location that the work is performed within the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employee may have contact with machining residues such as steel chips, grinding dust, EDM smoke, cutting oils and coolants. Safety glasses are required.
