GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety and reliability of County owned vehicles and equipment. This position performs troubleshooting, repairs, and /or overhaul of major components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related computer assisted electrical, electronic, braking, hydraulic, fuel and other assemblies. This position repairs a variety of vehicles and equipment, ranging from lawn mowers to large construction equipment and marine vessels. This role involves creating and managing work orders, installing and programming vehicle lights, radios, and other specialized equipment. This position maintains inventory, collaborates with engineers to select the best tires for various applications, and provides electrical services including wiring and installing emergency lights, radios, and sirens. The role requires proficiency in handling heavy equipment and maintaining detailed records of work completed. Duties include following instructions contained in technical manuals for tear downs, adjustments, repairs, reassembles, and completes operational checks in components of the systems; and using a wide variety of electronic diagnostic equipment conducts test and analyzes test results on vehicles and equipment. This position conducts independent research to diagnose drivability and performance issues and determines the best diagnosis and repair methods too reliably correct the issue. This role disassembles, repairs, replaces, reconditions and rebuilds components of various systems, and makes independent judgments based on specifications in technical manuals and on accepted trade practices. This position must have the ability to weld, fabricate (metal, wood, plastic, rubber), obtain ASE certification, and stay current with 5 or more industry certifications.

  • Performs a variety of preventative maintenance duties as scheduled, including oil changes, lubrications, replaced belts and hoses, brakes, check lights, and tune ups.
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces parts as needed.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure compliance with federal OSHA/NFPA specifications.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly shop.
  • Performs electrical system repair as needed.
  • Cleans various units, as necessary.
  • Provides emergency field assistance, as necessary.
  • Operates heavy equipment, as necessary.
  • Conducts road tests after repairs are completed to ensure vehicles are mechanically safe and function properly.
  • Creates and manages work orders to ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records of work completed and parts used.
  • Attends training classes, workshops, and meetings as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Assists with ordering parts and supplies and obtains parts from vendors, as necessary.
  • Collaborates with engineers to select and order tires. Repairs, rotates, or replaces tires.
  • Performs body work or painting, as necessary.
  • Installs special equipment on equipment.
  • Installs emergency lights and custom lights for safety and visibility on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs various computer activities such as scanning codes, reprogramming and programming systems, and writing new programs for emergency lighting systems.
  • Washes and cleans vehicles and equipment prior to maintenance.
  • Serves on-call 24 hours per day for emergency repair service.
  • Installs radios, antennas, and sirens in vehicles.
  • Installs and wires gunlock mounts, cages, and dog kennels.
  • Maintains inventory for lights and equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs marine equipment.
  • Uses diagnostic tools to scan vehicles and equipment.
  • Unloads and loads products using a forklift.
  • Assists coworkers with various tasks as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work with computers.

Ability to work with torches, plasma cutters, and welding equipment. 

Ability to use hydraulic press and drill press equipment.

Ability to understand technical manuals, charts, schematics, and diagrams. 

Ability to operate diagnostic computers and scanners. 

Ability to operate hand and pneumatic tools, volt meters, and HVAC equipment. 

Advanced mathematical skills. 

Good problem-solving skills. 

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 

Ability to weld.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Required: CDL with appropriate endorsements. Forklift and TIA Certifications, or ability to obtain.

Preferred: None.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. 

This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). 


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a high risk indoor and/or outdoor work environment; may encounter noise, weather, extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, fumes, gases, vibration, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards, bio-hazardous waste, moving mechanical parts, or working in high places. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves, or eye shields.
