JOB TITLEMechanical Engineer, Power Electronics (Contract)LOCATION: Berkeley, CA (onsite)TYPE: 6-month contract to hire ABOUT THE ROLEOur client is a venture-backed energy storage company building grid-scale battery systems. They're moving from their first customer sites into high-volume production, and they need mechanical engineers who can design the power path and get it ready to build thousands of times a year. You'll own the hardware that carries current from the battery cells out to the grid connection: busbars, harnesses, conductors and the enclosures and panels around them. This is a design seat, not a parts selection seat. You'll be designing the components, not picking them out of a catalog.WHAT YOU'LL DO- Design and size busbars, harnesses and conductors for high-current power paths- Run thermal hand calcs and build Excel tools to size components for heat generated and dissipated- Package electrical components inside large enclosures- Design sheet metal panels and enclosure parts for production- Rework existing designs to cut cost and assemble reliably on a production line- Work with suppliers and contract manufacturers to get parts right the first timeWHAT YOU NEED- BS in Mechanical Engineering- 2+ years in power electronics mechanical design (EV, battery packs, energy storage, high voltage equipment or similar)- Hands-on experience designing busbars, harnesses or other conductors- Solid thermal fundamentals: energy balance, heat generation and dissipation, component sizing- At least one product taken from concept through production- Real DFM experience on production parts (machined, sheet metal, plastic or copper), not just prototypes- Able to work onsite in Berkeley, CANICE TO HAVE- High voltage DC systems experience- Low to mid volume manufacturing ramp experience- Experience working directly with contract manufacturers- CAD and GD&T (SolidWorks, Creo, NX or similar)WHY THIS ONEGrid storage is one of the fastest growing corners of energy, and this team is past the science project stage and into real production. You'll do hands-on design work that ships, on a product that's still being figured out. It's not another iteration of a well-defined box.Technical Talent Group is an engineering staffing firm placing embedded, hardware, electrical, mechanical and semiconductor engineers.
