The Indianapolis Tech Center (ITC) is the central R&D facility for Prysmian North America. The center is 50,000 ft2 of dedicated research and development space with a highly qualified team of engineers and scientists whose sole mission is to deliver innovative cable technologies that meet the changing needs of our customers. ITC plays a central role in the following areas: Innovation, Security of Supply, Technical Services, Design to Cost, and New Product Introduction.

The Materials Analysis Engineer is responsible for leading material analysis projects and applying technical expertise to solve complex material and process-related challenges. This role develops and executes testing strategies, interprets analytical data, and provides actionable insights to internal customers. The engineer is expected to improve testing methods, contribute to standard operating procedures, and support both short-term technical service requests and longer-term R&D initiatives. Success in this role requires strong hands-on experience with polymer and materials characterization, the ability to independently manage multiple projects, and a curiosity-driven approach to root cause analysis and continuous learning.

Role Responsibilities

  • Perform deep and complex polymer materials analysis, including root cause analysis and deriving actionable insights from findings

  • Maintain a safe laboratory environment and ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures

  • Lead technical projects, including developing testing plans, executing analyses, interpreting data, and communicating results and recommendations

  • Perform laboratory testing with high data integrity to identify and resolve product, material, and customer issues

  • Expand and refine test plans as needed, including deeper investigative analysis (e.g., benchmarking, root cause studies)

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation; lead efforts to evaluate and submit recommendations to replace equipment when needed; Identify gaps in laboratory capabilities and recommend solutions

  • Utilize polymer and materials characterization tools (e.g., FT-IR, GC-MS, DSC, TGA, DMA, SEM, XRF, microscopy)

  • Develop, improve, and standardize test methods and support the creation of SOPs

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with varying priorities and deadlines while communicating effectively across all levels and groups

  • Prepare accurate, timely technical reports and maintain databases related to material and compound changes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or Materials/Polymer Engineering with emphasis in analytical characterization

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience in materials or polymer analysis

  • Hands-on experience with multiple analytical techniques (e.g., FT-IR, DSC, TGA, SEM, XRF, DMA, GC-MS)

  • Strong understanding of polymer/material behavior, characterization, and data interpretation

  • Proven ability to independently manage projects, analyze results, and communicate findings effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience in materials or polymer analysis, along with an advanced degree in a related field

  • Experience in wire & cable, polymer compounding and materials analysis, or related materials manufacturing industries

  • Knowledge of polymer processing, physical/mechanical properties, or formulation development

  • Demonstrated ability to lead root cause investigations and support process variability resolution

  • Strong curiosity and passion for materials science, including continuous learning (e.g., reviewing technical papers, patents, and emerging technologies)
