Position Overview
The Material Optimization Specialist will be responsible for maximizing material usage, minimizing waste and ensuring cost efficiency throughout the manufacturing process. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication, nesting software and lean manufacturing principles.
Position Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Two or more years of experience in sheet metal manufacturing, ERP/MRP systems and production scheduling tools and knowledge of sustainability and waste reduction initiatives in manufacturing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze production data to identify material usage trends, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement
- Develop and implement optimization strategies for raw material usage, particularly sheet metal.
- Utilize nesting software (e.g. Dr. Abe, VPSS 4ie or similar) to plan cutting layouts for maximum yield and minimum scrap.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to align cutting plans with product specifications and production schedules.
- Work closely with CNC programmers relating to new programs, tooling, revisions and any issues that arise.
- Monitor inventory levels and material usage in real time, ensuring optimal stock levels without over-ordering.
- Continuously review and improve nesting techniques, part layouts and scrap recovery strategies.

Hours: Regular 40-hour workweek. Overtime as needed.
