Job Overview:

The Opportunity:

Avantor is looking for a dedicated and experienced Manufacturing Process Safety Engineer. The Manufacturing Process Safety Engineer acts as a key technical resource for the organization. This role will focus on the Process Safety Management program at the Phillipsburg location. The expectation is for this individual to become the subject matter expert for Process Safety. The Process Safety Engineer will work closely with the Engineering, EHS, and Maintenance Managers to drive continuous improvement projects, provide clear technology direction and operational production support. The Process Safety Engineer will identify and recommend solutions to production problems, collaborate with internal customers to provide a plan to enhance process safety and improve processes. Under increasingly limited supervision, defines, measures, analyzes, implements solutions and enacts controls for improvements to product design, process design and process flow. Sustainable and measurable results related to process safety and product reliability and cost savings are key outputs of this role.

This role will be a full-time position base out of Phillisburg, NJ.

What we’re looking for

  • Education: BS or MS in Chemical Engineering.5-15 years of experience.
  • Experience: Familiar with process modeling and simulation software. OSHA PSM, RMP, TCPA, PHA's, PSSR's, MOC, etc. Able to multitask and handle multiple projects and deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Who you are:

  • Good communication, time management and interpersonal skills. High level of proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) Willingness to spend time in the field. Candidate must be highly organized, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • The Process Safety Engineer reports directly to the site Engineering Manager. He/she interfaces with both management and union personnel from various levels. The Process Safety Engineer works closely with manufacturing, understanding the processes and the cause-and effect-relationship of the manufacturing cycle.
  • Identifies and implements enhanced technologies to improve EHS, process capacity, process throughput, costs, etc. in manufacturing processes.
  • Works with R&D on effective design, scale-up and transition of new products to manufacturing as it relates to process safety.
  • Must be able to plan projects that will operate in the short term, medium term and long term, balancing timelines, analyses, etc.
  • Must be able to specify a future state improvement and devise the actions required to achieve the goal.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the site lead for PSM program to organize and administer program.
  • Partner with site management to cover leadership requirements (see below).
  • Work with site management to maintain/update program and procedure reviews.
  • Maintain 1st party audit program, perform audits
  • Serve as primary/lead auditor (training is needed and will be required per internal standards).
  • Ensure operating procedures are written and reviewed on a cycle
  • Hazard Assessment and Tracking:
  • Set up and maintain tracking system for MOCs and overall compliance.
  • Periodic follow up with action item owners, document and share progress
  • Scheduling and tracking hazard assessments for new and existing equipment and processes.
  • Work with site personnel to establish and maintain necessary mechanical inspection plans
  • Setup and track site pressure relief, piping, and ventilation systems
  • Coordinate and participate in process/equipment failure investigations.
  • Support other technical engineering projects as needed

  • Must be able to make well-grounded decisions and assessments using safety and engineering tools
  • Must be able to lead and motivate others to perform tasks accurately, completely and on-time.
  • Must be able to work in a cross functional environment, respecting and engaging others to resolve problems and improve processes.
  • Coordinate diverse groups from manufacturing, quality assurance, engineering and operations to achieve required goals.
  • Provides coaching and training to others on analysis tools and results.

Safety Related:

  • Adheres to all site safety policies.
  • Identifies potential hazardous situations and addresses hazardous processes
  • Identifies and implements enhanced technologies to improve Environmental, Health and Safety attributes of manufacturing practices

Process / Deliverable Related:

  • Independently design and manage projects to timelines.
  • Manage and sustain organizational change.
  • Achieve goals within prescribed time frames.
  • Easily assume ownership role in ensuring that all projects are coordinated thoroughly including formation of teams, training of applicable personnel, design of project, data collection and analysis, implementation of corrective action and establishment of control measures to ensure sustainable change.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills. Understanding of SPC and the ability to implement appropriate metrics and monitoring. Successful experience with PSM, continuous quality improvement implementations and Lean Initiatives.
  • Schedules project assignments and maintains process flow to ensure timely completion of analyses.
  • Assumes ownership role in ensuring that projects are completed on-time and accurately.
  • Responsible for designing and implementing new processes as a result of analyses.
  • Initiative, competence and confidence to anticipate and respond to issues.
  • Learn process, chemistry and equipment quickly in order to lead problem solving activities.
  • Must be able to independently identify opportunities for improvement, gather the appropriate data to support the change and speak to the change in a scientific and persuasive manner data to support the change and speak to the change in a scientific and persuasive manner.
