We are seeking a patient, skilled, and detail-oriented Manual Precision OD Grinder to set up and operate a specialized 2-axis manual cylindrical grinding machine (Shigiya GP-45B). In this role, you will perform fine finish grinding on high-precision piston rods to achieve mirror-like surface finishes (2–4 microinches Ra) and tight dimensional tolerances.
This position uses a Trizact diamond-embedded abrasive belt system backed by a grinding wheel. Experience grinding with belt systems or thermal-spray coatings is NOT required—we will train anyone with strong traditional manual OD grinding experience on a grinding wheel who demonstrates solid technical judgment and adaptability.
Machine Operation & Setup: Set up and operate a manual Shigiya GP-45B cylindrical grinder using hard stops, two-axis manual controls, and table-angle adjustments to remove taper and achieve precise outer diameters.
Precision Finishing: Perform finish grinding on 4140 base steel piston rods coated with chrome-carbide plasma or other thermal-spray coatings (hardnesses ranging from 62–70 HRC).
In-Process Quality Control: Perform rigorous self-inspections throughout long cycle times (2–4 hours). Constantly monitor dimensions, adjust feed/traverse parameters, and re-verify size using pressure micrometers and profilometers.
Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Interpret inch blueprints and engineering drawings with GD&T callouts, focusing heavily on tight runout (down to .0003”) and concentricity requirements.
Secondary Operations (Cross-Training): Learn and occasionally operate 2-axis manual engine lathes (Lodge & Clausing with DROs) and a conventional WMW dressable-wheel grinder as production demands shift.
Material Handling & Maintenance: Utilize a 1/2-ton overhead crane to load/unload parts (24”–80” length, 1.75”–6” diameter) weighing over 30 lbs. Perform routine maintenance, including replacing abrasive belts when worn.
Quality Escalation: Document paper discrepancy records and collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers on any non-conforming material issues.
Grinding Experience: Proven experience operating manual OD cylindrical grinders with traditional grinding wheels.
Precision Tolerances: Ability to consistently achieve ultra-fine surface finishes (2–4 microinches Ra), tight diameter tolerances (±.0005”), and strict runout limits (.0001”–.0003”).
Measurement Skills: Proficiency with precision measurement equipment, specifically pressure micrometers and profilometers.
Adaptability & Mindset: Strong problem-solving skills, patience, and a high degree of attention to detail to learn the specific nuances of an older, well-maintained manual machine.
Physical Capability: Ability to safely load parts using overhead cranes or manually maneuver smaller components under 30 lbs.
Experience grinding parts with thermal-spray or plasma-coated surfaces.
Prior experience operating manual engine lathes with DROs.
Experience adjusting table angle setups to resolve taper issues during live operations.
