MANUAL MACHINIST SUMMARY

Set-up, adjust and operate conventional and/or CNC machines to fabricate required parts by performing the following duties. Experience with HAAS, Bridgeport style knee mills and manual lathes, pedestal and surface grinders, fixtures and jigs. 

 

MANUAL MACHINIST ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  include the following. Other duties as assigned.

  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and set-up requirements.  
  • Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.  
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jog borers, grinders, and shapers.  
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.  
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.  
  • Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.  
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.  
  • Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly. 
  • Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.   
  • Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch or part or product to be fabricated. 
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Requirements

MANUAL MACHINIST SAFETY TRAINING To perform this job successfully, an individual must complete and maintain the following Safety Training requirements.

General Safety Orientation Hearing Protection Training

 

MANUAL MACHINIST QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. MANUAL MACHINIST EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Certificate from a college or technical school; or three to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

MANUAL MACHINIST LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.

 

MANUAL MACHINIST MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to perform machinist’s math. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

MANUAL MACHINIST REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
