Job Overview:

We are seeking a Manual Machinist who will be responsible for making models and prototypes, doing general machine shop work, mechanical repairs to equipment, and purchasing tools and materials.

 Essential Functions:

  • Operate all equipment in the Model Shop area, including manual lathes, manual vertical milling machines (Bridgeports), surface grinder, manual breaks, band saws, and welding; TIG, MIG, and stick equipment. 
  • Work closely with engineering personnel in designing and fabricating models and prototypes of products, special machines, and test equipment.
  • Develop and construct equipment, apparatus, mechanisms, or attachments where only tentative design is available or work from rough sketches or oral instructions to produce workable parts, units, and/or models. Rectify trouble products and recommend remedial action.
  • Plan and perform various machine‑tool, fitting, and assembly operations. Make necessary tools, jigs, and fixtures incidental to the work.
  • Work with other employees as required in assigning, checking, and expediting workflow to meet schedules and results involved in developing prototypes and special equipment to test and evaluate products and materials under actual or simulated conditions.
  • Maintain and keep necessary inventory of parts and materials.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follow standard or prescribed safety regulations and maintenance schedules on equipment.
  • Work well with others as part of a team.
  • Recommend required equipment to meet our fabrication needs.
  • Complete required paperwork such as time sheets, job records, and purchase orders.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Assist technicians as required.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the departmental function.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High school diploma with formal training on machining equipment (trade school/apprenticeship program)
  • A minimum of two years of machining experience
  • Ability to use a computer, software, and applications like Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to run various machining equipment, including lathe, mill, band saw, drill presses, surface grinders, etc.
  • Ability to perform arc and gas welding fabrication.
  • Ability to maintain close tolerances (±.001" in some cases.)
  • Ability to use sheet metal brake.
  • Ability to interpret and draw blueprints and do light drafting.
  • Ability to machine various materials.
  • Ability to deal with people of all levels.
  • Must be a team player.
