Job Overview:

Description

Thread-Craft is looking for an experienced Manual Lathe Operator / Manual Machinist to join our precision machining team. We take pride in producing high-quality components and creating an environment where skilled tradespeople can continue to learn, develop their abilities, and succeed. If you enjoy hands-on machining, solving mechanical problems, and producing accurate parts, this could be a great opportunity for you.

In this role, you’ll operate manual and semi-automatic lathes to machine precision metal components according to engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications. We’re looking for someone with strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn new processes and technology. The ideal candidate takes initiative, works safely, and takes pride in producing quality parts while contributing to a team-focused manufacturing environment

Requirements

 What You Will Do

  • Operate manual lathes, engine lathes, and other manual machining equipment to produce precision components within specified tolerances.
  • Set up machines by selecting and installing tooling, cutting tools, boring bars, fixtures, inserts, and workholding devices.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and machining specifications to determine proper machining methods and dimensions.
  • Measure and verify machined parts using precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools.
  • Perform first-piece inspections and in-process quality checks to verify dimensions, tolerances, and overall product quality.
  • Adjust machine settings, sharpen or replace cutting tools, and follow proper machining procedures to maintain accuracy and extend tool life.
  • Monitor machine performance, identify issues, perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance, and report equipment concerns to the supervisor.
  • Identify and report defective materials, out-of-tolerance parts, and other quality concerns.
  • Accurately record labor and job transactions in ERP manufacturing software.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following established safety procedures.
  • Cross-train on additional machining equipment and manufacturing tasks as needed.
  • Take initiative to identify opportunities to improve machining processes, efficiency, and product quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Accomplish

You will help produce high-quality, precision-machined components that meet engineering specifications and customer requirements. Through careful machine setup, accurate measurements, consistent quality checks, and proactive problem-solving, you’ll help minimize defects, reduce waste, and maintain efficient production. Your contributions will support reliable manufacturing operations while helping the team meet quality and delivery expectations.

You Will Achieve This By

  • Applying your manual machining knowledge and mechanical aptitude to produce accurate, repeatable results.
  • Taking ownership of your work and addressing potential problems before they affect quality or production.
  • Demonstrating a willingness to learn new machining techniques, equipment, and manufacturing technologies.
  • Maintaining strong attention to detail when interpreting blueprints, setting up machines, and inspecting finished parts.
  • Working collaboratively with machinists, inspectors, supervisors, and other production team members.
  • Following safe work practices and maintaining high standards for workmanship and organization.
  • Looking for opportunities to improve processes, develop new skills, and contribute beyond your immediate responsibilities.

What You Bring to the Team

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One to three years of skilled trades training or approximately two years of equivalent hands-on machining experience.
  • Experience operating manual machining equipment, with five years of manual machining or toolroom experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of manual lathe operation, cutting tools, tool holders, boring bars, inserts, fixtures, and machining accessories.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, dimensions, and machining tolerances.
  • Basic mathematical skills and experience using precision measuring instruments, including calipers and micrometers.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and attention to detail.
  • Experience operating an engine lathe and Bridgeport milling machine is highly desirable.
  • Ability to learn new processes, adapt to technology, and use ERP software to document job transactions.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, reliability, and a commitment to producing quality work.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 70 pounds occasionally.
