Position Overview:

An established and demonstrated professional capable of equipment design and selection for power plants and similar industrial marketplaces in support of key technologies like SCR, SNCR, Urea to Ammonia conversion. Highly motivated and capable of producing high quality results with little day-to-day supervision or direction. Strong leadership and communication skills. Understands departmental goals and ensures that departmental procedures and activities are in support of those goals. Demonstrated management skills for 4-10 direct reports from project engineering, I&C to CAD and Designer individuals.

Responsibilities:

  1. Thoroughly reviews and becomes familiar with all project contracts and supporting documents to support direct report(s) with the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, risks.
  2. Identifies bottlenecks with resource assignments and call these out to Project Managers, Department leaders and presents a viable solution.
  3. Prepares detailed conceptual design and equipment requirements including pressure and flow basis, and engineering inputs for detailed design.  Able to perform detail design, develop the BOM and review drawings for accuracy,
  4. Oversees project details, including design, drawings, fabrication inspections and final inspections, testing, startup, and optimization.
  5. Assures that all equipment and services meet applicable codes and standards for design, safety and quality.
  6. Coordinates the project team, which may include Sales, process engineers, project engineers, technicians, electrical/instruments/controls engineer, field start-up team, vendors and consultants, and the client.
  7. Makes field visits as required to observe work, review progress, resolve issues and attend project meetings; may be assigned to support power plant critical outages that require extended hours and long duration of up to 4 weeks.
  8. Communicates and documents project status through project reports, budget analysis, meeting minutes, logs, action lists and all other required communications and records; and assures that all records are appropriately archived.
  9. Continually assesses resource risks and adjusts assignments to avoid or mitigate negative consequences.
  10. Maintains an awareness of technical developments in assigned areas.  Recommends new products or improved sources for goods and services to the supervisor.
  11. Ensures the adherence to Fuel Tech policies, procedures, affirmative action, equal opportunity policies, safety plans, quality practices and assigned goals.
  12. Always performs the job in a safe and responsible manner; abiding by all laws, codes, and site-specific work rules; and striving to satisfy the client with performance and results.
  13. Leads direct reports not only to be an example but through coaching and training to improve their skills. Holds direct reports accountable for high quality work product and deadlines 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will have multiple direct reports and is responsible for the performance evaluation, goal setting and evaluation for all direct reports.

  • Language and Presentation Skills (Priority)- Ability to effectively present information, deliver presentations and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, skilled trades, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations and communicate pertinent information to the team and FTI population. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Analytical - Synthesizes information; Collects and researches data; Applies workflows, checklists, work instructions and procedures. Ability to prioritize and solve practical problems and apply good engineering judgement during the life of a project. Work in office or site conditions where there may be limited or ambiguous guidance available on solving technical issues.
  • Communication Skills - Speaks and writes clearly and can articulate an issue with clarity. Is able to understand verbal and written instruction. Can be effective while working under tight deadlines or situations where individual performance is critical to project success.  Keeps management aware of higher level issues and understands the importance of timely communications.
  • Design – Follows standards and instructions and is able to generate creative solutions to the benefit of the client and Fuel Tech, Inc.  Applies solid documentation and organization to design deliverables. Maintains keen awareness to detail. Maintains understanding and application of current design codes.
  • Problem Solving - Gathers and analyzes key information to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Demonstrated ability to anticipate bottlenecks and creates a path forward to minimizing those impacts.
  • Excellence and Quality Management – Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.   Specific computer or testing skills may be required for specific assignments. Must have experience with industry design standards and codes. 
  • Judgment – Displays good engineering judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Planning/Organizing - Prioritizes and plans work activities without daily supervision.  Plans for additional resources; organizes or schedules other people and their tasks.

Education and Experience:

Requires a BS in Engineering or PM certification is desirable. First-hand experience with SNCR, SCR, and Ura to ammonia conversion system is necessary. Highly proficient with the disciplines given of the position and significant experience with utility boilers, industrial furnaces and related equipment is essential.   Established competency in the use of Project Engineering/Management, Spreadsheet, Presentation and Word Processing software. Requires a minimum of 6 years of demonstrated project management or project engineering experience with evidence of increasing responsibilities and proficiency with capital projects. Proficient with Arrow Flow modeling software. Demonstrated direct report management skills.

Physical Requirements: 

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times. 

Travel Requirements:

Travel (<10%) but may involve extended periods of two weeks in the field and/or international travel to support critical outage projects with extended work hours on occasion. Primary travel requirements will focus on client meetings, vendor and shop visits and site walkdowns.
