Summary of Primary Functions: Assist the Maintenance Mechanics in all work to learn the skills of a Class A Maintenance Mechanic. Work involves performing some activities of lesser skills independently, such as tuning up automobiles, general maintenance of building structures, replacing worn-out parts, etc. But it also includes working hand-in-hand with trained mechanics to diagnose and repair machinery and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Maintenance Mechanics in the performance of the following duties:
  • Examine machines and mechanical equipment to diagnose the source of trouble.
  • Dismantle machines and reassemble if necessary.
  • Replace broken and worn-out parts; Order replacement parts if required.
  • Make all necessary adjustments to ensure proper operation.
  • Keep the building structures and equipment in good repair, repair plumbing fixtures, etc., and occasionally paint or touch up structures or equipment.
  • Repair, rebuild, or overhaul internal combustion engines, including replacing piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors, etc.
  • Overhaul transmissions and repair fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as directed by the Supervisor.


Job Specifications or Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
