Join our team at Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL), a world leader in biosourced pharmaceuticals, located just outside of Madison, Wisconsin in Waunakee!  SPL is an innovative biopharmaceutical leader with unique products and services supporting the pharmaceutical industry globally.  For over 40 years, SPL specializes in the development and cGMP compliant manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).  SPL has an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Maintenance and Automation Manager.

 

This position is responsible to manage and coordinate the work of the Reliability Engineering, Electrical & Controls Engineering, and Maintenance Teams to maximize efficiency and support manufacturing goals. The position requires understanding and implementing advanced maintenance programs and systems in a highly regulated environment. The Maintenance and Automation Manager must have an excellent understanding of cost structures in a manufacturing environment. Manages utilities and negotiates utility contracts. High emphasis on reliability, OEM replacements, and responsiveness to operational needs. The Maintenance and Automation Manager must understand and implement continuous improvement in a pharmaceutical and PSM environment. Emphasis on identifying, acquiring, and training highly skilled staff at minimum expenditure. Managing automated systems in OT environment to leverage real-time data for maintenance and throughput optimization.  Manage process controls, PLC’s, GAMP compliance, electrical utilities, fire and security systems, and other electrical/electronic systems in a cGMP environment. The Maintenance and Automation Manager leads cross-functional activities for continuous improvement and failure investigations.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead corrective, predictive, and preventative maintenance activities. Identify opportunities for improvement and implement TPM activities. Utilize vibration analysis, thermal analysis, and other predictive maintenance tools.   
  • Implement and review site-specific maintenance logs for each department. Provide a summary of maintenance conditions and recommendations to the Director of Engineering. Ensure facilities and grounds are maintained per Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP'S).       
  • Leads the development of policies and procedures related to maintenance of facilities, grounds, and equipment.         
  • Manage and coordinate the Maintenance Department, Utilities Department, Custodial Group and Facility Security.    
  • Develops and adheres to the maintenance and utilities budgets. Determines capital needs and develops appropriation requests as require to maintain the facility. 
  • Ensure that the maintenance team adheres to company operating procedures, cGMP's, established practices, and financial considerations.
  • Communicate with the Quality department to ensure compliance with cGMP documentation requirements.  
  • Ensure that department training meets cGMP, OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements. Provide staff training in a variety of topics including effective utilization of the maintenance logs, completion of routine maintenance specific to the facility, equipment operations, fire safety, lockout/tag-out, and cGMP considerations.  
  • Manage stores and spare parts inventories to achieve balance of cost and response time. Direct the maintenance planner and storeroom attendant in the effective use of the CMMS.    
  • Supervise electricians, electronics techs, system integrators and contract programmers to provide leadership in the Electrical Engineering department for OT, process controls, electrical and instrumentation matters.          
  • Manage capital projects to deliver high quality installations with on-time and on-budget execution.           
  • Managing OT, process controls, PLC’s, GAMP compliance, electrical utilities, fire and security systems, and other electrical/electronic systems in a cGMP environment.
  • Evaluate equipment, programming, and systems for compliance with GAMP.   
  • Develop policies and procedures related to maintenance of facilities, grounds, programming, and equipment.
  • Ensure that department training meets GAMP, cGMP, OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements as they relate to controls, electrical and instrument issues.          
  • Analyze system needs, make calculations, and determine requirements for improvements as well as investigate codes and ensure that SPL installations meet the requirements.     
  • Manage and oversee vibration analysis, thermal analysis, and other predictive maintenance tools and reports to improve plant reliability.
  • Prepare designs and layouts of OT, process controls, electrical and mechanical and provide technical specifications for execution.         

 

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

 

  • Education: Associate degree required; Master’s degree or above in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Reliability) or related discipline preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience required, 10+ years of experience preferred.
