Job Overview:


The Machinist/Set-Up Operator (Grinding) will work as part of a team in a production cell consisting of pinch/peel grinding, milling and laser marking operations and focused on the ultra-precision of a specific part family.  The cell operator will ensure that all manufactured parts are in full compliance with quality standards and customer specifications.   This role will be responsible for assisting other operators with set-up or production as well as training.  This position will interface with other departments including Planning, Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Shipping/Receiving/Materials. 

Major Areas of Responsibility: 

  • Set-up and operate Pinch/Peel grinder, milling machine, laser marker and required quality inspection equipment.
  • Work from blueprints, operation sheets, travelers, and specifications. 
  • Checks to make sure that the material to be used meets all specifications. Obtains bar stock or material from a staging area. 
  • Performs complex set-ups of own work and assists other Operators or Set-up/Operators with set-up or production problems. Helps to train others. 
  • Makes all required adjustments to the machinery. Loads and edits program as required. Obtains tooling, gages, inserts and all other equipment needed to complete the set-up.
  • Ensures that all manufactured parts are in full compliance with quality standards. Performs visual inspections (part relationship to operation sheet/blueprint configuration) on all parts produced and performs actual dimensional verification using measuring instruments as per the guidelines established by the Quality Assurance Department. 
  • Replaces all worn or damaged tooling as necessary.
  • Verifies and records the actual part count, both prior to and upon completion of all work. 
  • Performs all routine maintenance on the equipment and maintains all fluid levels. Keeps the equipment and work area clean and organized.
  • Returns excess bar stock or material to the staging area.
  • Packs and washes/preserves parts as needed.
  • Moves the finished work to an assigned area. Enters all work performed in the database and documents all scrap. Notifies lead person or supervisor of any parts shortages or machining problems/difficulties.
  • Performs other machining and assembly operations as needed.
  • Interacts with associates from all departments.
  • Maintain 5S in the cell area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • Three to five years of increasingly diverse experience in either a machine shop or CNC machining environment; medical/aerospace experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to be very detail oriented and a proactive problem solver.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Must be able to read and write comments, understand operation sheets/blueprints, specifications, and all applicable Company/Customer paperwork.
  • Must be able to read and edit CNC Programs
  • Swiss turn experience a plus
  • Technical school training for CNC Machining a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit/stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to walk long distances through the building.
  • Ability to push/pull/carry/lift up to 50 lbs.
