General Atomics Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division designs, manufactures and characterized first-of-a-kind precision components in support of the national labs, fusion and science technologies. Components are manufactured and measured on a variety of highly-specialized and precise equipment and are often millimeter in scale with micron-sized features and tolerances.

Seeking an experienced 5-Axis CNC Machinist / Programmer to program, set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC equipment used to manufacture complex, high-precision components.
 
The successful candidate brings advanced CNC programming and hands-on machining experience, including the ability to take a component from engineering drawing/CAD model through programming, setup, machining, and inspection.
 
Work may include beryllium (Be), depleted uranium (DU), and other materials in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Develop, program, set up, and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machining processes for complex, high-precision components.
  • Cleans machines and work area. Deburrs parts.
  • Create and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam, NX CAM, Creo NC, or comparable advanced CAM systems.
  • Performs kitting of production tools, fixtures, cutters and pre-cut raw material.
  • Establishes tool positions, centerlines, and tool heights within precision machining equipment.
  • Perform machine setup, program prove-out, machining, in-process inspection, and troubleshooting to achieve dimensional, surface-finish, and production requirements.
  • Develop complete machining strategies from CAD models and engineering drawings, including operation sequencing, tooling, work holding, feeds and speeds, and GD&T requirements.
  • Records and maintains programs, setup documentation, and manufacturing records in accordance with established protocols and standards.
  • Monitors and verifies quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and metrology to resolve manufacturing issues and improve machining processes.
  • Follow approved procedures for machining beryllium (Be), depleted uranium (DU), and other hazardous or controlled materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires an associate's degree, technical/trade school training or equivalent and seven or more years related experience. Additional experience may be substituted for formal education. 
  • Preferred: 5–10+ years of CNC machining and programming experience with complex, high-precision components and proficiency with CAM software.

Must be customer focused and possess:
  • The ability to perform semi-routine set-up and fabrication of machined parts.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, G-code/M-code, tooling, workholding, feeds and speeds, and precision measurement
  • Good knowledge of machining equipment including ability to use judgment and safe practices.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering blue prints and diagrams.
  • Skills to maintain the flow of work within the unit.
  • Good interpersonal skills and written communication skills to interface with employees and supervisor.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be comfortable handling fragile, millimeter-scale components for both fabrication and inspection activities.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
