Atlas Machine & Supply is seeking motivated, dependable individuals to join our Machinist Co-Op / Apprentice Program at our Louisville machine shop. This opportunity is designed for students currently enrolled in a school-sponsored co-op program as well as high school graduates seeking to enter a registered machinist apprenticeship.
This role provides hands-on experience in a production machine shop environment while developing the technical skills needed for a long-term career in machining.
Atlas offers a structured machinist training pathway that combines supervised on-the-job learning with formal technical education.
1. Machinist Co-Op
Designed for high school students currently enrolled in an approved school co-op program
Students remain enrolled in school while gaining hands-on shop experience
Upon high school graduation, co-op participants may apply to the Atlas Apprenticeship Program
Continuation into the apprenticeship program is not guaranteed
2. Machinist Apprentice
Designed for individuals who have already graduated high school
Apprentices may enter with some or all prior machining education completed.
Additional Related Technical Instruction (RTI) hours will be provided during the apprenticeship through KMA, if needed.
Includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, typically completed over four years.
This is a state-registered and state-certified apprenticeship program.
Apprentices earn an official Journeyman Machinist Certificate upon successful completion.
Apprentices are paid while training, and Atlas covers the cost of approved RTI coursework.
Under supervision and guidance, the Machinist Co-Op / Apprentice sets up and operates hand and machine tools as directed by supervisors and journeyman machinists. This role focuses on in-house machining operations and does not require travel.

Machine various materials as directed
Modify and adjust metal parts for special projects
Perform preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and machinery
Repair or manufacture parts as directed
Assist with machine setup and teardown
Assist with assembly and disassembly of machinery and equipment
Use, inspect, and maintain a variety of hand tools
Perform general shop tasks as assigned
Follow all safety procedures and shop standards
Currently enrolled in high school and participating in an approved school co-op program
Must meet all school co-op eligibility requirements
High school diploma or GED required
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and technical documentation
Ability to write simple correspondence
Basic math proficiency (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; whole numbers, fractions, and decimals)
Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions
Strong problem-solving skills
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to stand, sit, squat, twist, or stoop for extended periods
Ability to work in a moderate-noise shop environment
