Job Overview:

 

SUMMARY: Reporting to the machine shop supervisor, the machinist will setup and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control machines and machining centers in a safe and efficient manner to achieve the quality and production standards of the company.

Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret machining instructions, job orders, and blueprints to determine dimensional specifications, sequences of operations, setups, and tooling requirements
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or workpieces as guides for subsequent machining
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speeds, feed rates, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cuts, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
  • Load, check, and run tooling and programs to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required
  • Verify conformance of machined work to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and fixed or telescoping gauges
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems
  • Perform in-process inspections and document results
  • Monitor and maintain tooling during job runs
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including tasks completed and time spent on each task
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance machining skills and knowledge
  • Undertake other duties as needed and assigned to support team objectives

Skills/Knowledge/Experience/Education Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • One (1) year of related experience and/or training
  • Proficiency in basic mathematics, including the ability to accurately read and interpret tape measures and blueprints
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), with a solid understanding of machining processes
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as work order routings, safety rules, procedures, etc
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift as required

Other:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching all day. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds. Anything over 50 pounds will be moved with a forklift or overhead crane. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
