Machine Shop Manager

Position Overview:

The Machine Shop Manager oversees daily operations of a manual machine shop, ensuring efficient production, high-quality output, and on-time delivery. This role leads a team of machinists and shop personnel while maintaining a strong focus on safety, workflow optimization, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage daily operations of the machine shop (manual mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, etc.)
• Lead, train, and supervise machinists and shop personnel
• Assign and prioritize jobs to meet production schedules and deadlines
• Read and interpret blueprints and work orders to guide production
• Oversee setups, machining processes, and troubleshooting on manual equipment
• Ensure all parts meet quality standards and specifications
• Monitor workflow, productivity, and shop efficiency
• Maintain equipment, tooling, and shop organization (5S standards)
• Enforce safety procedures and ensure compliance across the shop
• Track KPIs such as output, scrap, and on-time delivery
• Collaborate with engineering and operations on process improvements

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of hands-on machining experience (manual machining required)
• 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a shop environment
• Strong knowledge of manual machining processes and equipment
• Ability to read blueprints and understand tolerances
• Experience working with various materials (steel, aluminum, etc.)
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred:

• Experience in fabrication or repair-based environments
• Background in job shop or custom manufacturing settings
• Lean / continuous improvement experience
