Machine Shop Manager
Position Overview:
The Machine Shop Manager oversees daily operations of a manual machine shop, ensuring efficient production, high-quality output, and on-time delivery. This role leads a team of machinists and shop personnel while maintaining a strong focus on safety, workflow optimization, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage daily operations of the machine shop (manual mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, etc.)
- Lead, train, and supervise machinists and shop personnel
- Assign and prioritize jobs to meet production schedules and deadlines
- Read and interpret blueprints and work orders to guide production
- Oversee setups, machining processes, and troubleshooting on manual equipment
- Ensure all parts meet quality standards and specifications
- Monitor workflow, productivity, and shop efficiency
- Maintain equipment, tooling, and shop organization (5S standards)
- Enforce safety procedures and ensure compliance across the shop
- Track KPIs such as output, scrap, and on-time delivery
- Collaborate with engineering and operations on process improvements
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on machining experience (manual machining required)
- 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a shop environment
- Strong knowledge of manual machining processes and equipment
- Ability to read blueprints and understand tolerances
- Experience working with various materials (steel, aluminum, etc.)
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience in fabrication or repair-based environments
- Background in job shop or custom manufacturing settings
- Lean / continuous improvement experience
You should be proficient in:
- Production Planning & Scheduling
