Job Overview:

Essential Functions of Role:

This position is required to meet all USDA, HACCP, GMP, and Company standards and is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering training programs for maintenance and facilities personnel across a variety of technical disciplines. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical and electrical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for developing others. The Technical Trainer will ensure that our team members are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain facilities, equipment and systems, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with industry standards.


Responsibilities Include and Accountable For:

  • Training Program Development:
    • Develop comprehensive training programs for maintenance staff, covering equipment operation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and safety procedures.
    • Design training materials including manuals, slides, videos, and simulations to support learning objectives.
    • Stay updated on the latest industry standards, tools, and technologies, incorporating them into training materials.
  • Delivery of Training:
    • Conduct hands-on and classroom-based training sessions for new hires and ongoing skill development of existing staff.
    • Offer one-on-one training and mentoring to ensure learners are equipped with practical and theoretical knowledge.
    • Lead practical assessments to evaluate skills, providing feedback for performance improvement.
    • Conduct maintenance department new hire orientation.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Emphasize safety best practices in all training sessions, ensuring compliance with OSHA, local, and Michigan Turkey Producers safety standards.
    • Conduct safety drills and simulations to reinforce emergency procedures and safe work practices.
  • Assessment & Reporting:
    • Assess trainee performance through written and practical evaluations, providing constructive feedback.
    • Monitor and track training progress, ensuring that all team members are up to date with necessary certifications and competencies.
    • Report on training effectiveness and suggest improvements to continually enhance the program.
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement:
    • Work closely with the Maintenance Leadership and other departments to identify training needs and fill skill gaps.
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance maintenance processes, reduce downtime, and optimize the training curriculum.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent (required); Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field (preferred).
    • Proven experience as a maintenance technician, supervisor, or trainer in an industrial environment (minimum of 3-5 years).
    • Certification in maintenance-related fields (e.g., CMRT, CMRP, or similar) is a plus.
    • Journeyman or Master certification in a skilled trade is a plus.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
    • Proficiency in maintenance management software and tools.
    • Proficiency in computer usage including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Office.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach.
    • Ability to design and implement engaging training programs.
    • Familiarity with training and evaluation tools, such as learning management systems (LMS).
    • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Additional Information:
    • This position may require occasional travel to other company sites for training sessions.
    • Flexibility in hours may be necessary to accommodate shift schedules for training delivery.
    • Training and assessments may involve working at heights, in cold environments, or outdoors.
    • A valid driver’s license may be required.

 


Key Measurable Results:

  • Safety Performance:
    • Reviewing safety incidents and near misses to determine if procedures or training need to be updated.
    • Reduction in maintenance related injuries.
  • Quality Performance:
    • Reviewing quality incidents and near misses to determine if procedures or training need to be updated.
    • Review product quality reports weekly with Assistant Plant Managers to determine if training improvements can be made to increase yields. 
  • Equipment Uptime:
    • Reviewing mechanical downtime events to determine what training, tools, or procedures could be updated or create to minimize or eliminate future downtime events.
    • Review troubleshooting approach used during downtime events to identify opportunities to accelerate or eliminate troubleshooting steps.
    • Increase MTBF on targeted equipment.
    • Participate in downtime RCAs to identify training opportunities.
  • Employee Development:
    • Training curriculum and support materials are up to date and reviewed biennially. 
    • Standard 90-day training plan established, maintained, and tracked for all new mechanics.
    • Training plans executed on schedule.
    • Training effectiveness as demonstrated by feedback assessments, individual test scores, and certifications


Physical Qualifications:

  • Must be able to physically perform the essential functions of the role as outlined.  
  • Must be able to lift, tighten (“torque”) equipment up to approximately 70 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach heights of 17’ to repair & /or inspect equipment.
  • Must be able to physically perform equipment repairs in a wet, slippery/uneven environment which includes but is not limited to sloped flooring, pitched flooring, steps throughout work areas,  and twist, bend, reach, and stand for 10-12 hours or the duration of the shift, in a wet cold environment.  
  • Must be able to get underneath or mount equipment ranging from below grade (below floor level) and work in confined spaces of 2’x 2’or larger to perform repairs and inspections.
  • Must be able to safely & efficiently make machine repairs in a seriously demanding, challenging, fast-paced, high pressure and tense atmosphere.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including:
    1. Ear plugs
    2. Hard Hat
    3. Hair Net
    4. Protective Coat (clothing protector)
    5. Forearm protection
    6. Plastics gloves
    7. Cotton gloves
  • Ability to work in “normal” office conditions.
  • Ability to use computer keyboard, telephone, copying machine, labeling machine, laminating machine, etc.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and audibly and to understand spoken requests.
  • Ability to detect and hear emergency alarm systems, understand verbal communication, phone system paging, and to assist and respond to emergency situations calmly, quickly, and appropriately.
  • Ability to visualize computer screens and to read and understand typed and written materials. Must be able to operate and use office machines and equipment including telephone, computer, facsimile machine, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand the English language.
