Job Overview:
Summary
The Truck Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of structural steel materials between company shops and designated drop lots. This role plays a critical part in supporting daily fabrication and shipping operations by ensuring material movement is efficient, accurate, and compliant with all regulatory and safety standards.
Responsibilities:
- Transport fabricated steel, raw materials, and components between company facilities and approved drop lots.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance.
- Secure steel loads properly and safely according to DOT regulations and company policy.
- Maintain accurate delivery logs, load manifests, and required paperwork.
- Communicate proactively with shop supervisors, logistics coordinators, and dispatch regarding delays, delivery status, or safety issues.
- Assist with loading/unloading as needed, using proper equipment and rigging practices.
- Report mechanical issues or damage to vehicles immediately.
- Comply with all local, state, and federal traffic laws and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Valid CDL Class A driver's license.
- Clean driving record with at least 5 years of commercial driving experience, preferably hauling steel or heavy materials.
- Must have experience with flatbeds, chains, and binders.
- Ability to read shop tickets and follow delivery instructions accurately.
- Strong safety mindset and attention to detail.
- Reliable, punctual, and self-directed.
Working Conditions
- Operates primarily on local Lynchburg-area routes between company-owned and contracted locations, ensuring the driver is home nightly.
- May require occasional overtime, weekend work, or early morning shifts based on production demands.
- Outdoor work required in varying weather conditions.
- Requires lifting up to 50 lbs. and operating loading/unloading equipment.
