Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled and dependable** Licensed Water & Wastewater Operator 3** to oversee the daily operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems while ensuring regulatory compliance and reliable service. This position is responsible for monitoring system performance, performing testing and preventative maintenance, operating treatment equipment, and responding to operational issues as they arise.

The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently while maintaining compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations. This individual will also lead and supervise Water & Wastewater Operators I and II, providing guidance and support to ensure daily operational and maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operation and maintenance of public water distribution and wastewater collection and treatment systems.
  • Lead and support Water & Wastewater Operators while assisting with daily operational activities as needed.
  • Perform routine inspections of water system components, treatment equipment, wells, and wastewater facilities to ensure efficient operation.
  • Collect water and wastewater samples, perform required laboratory testing, and maintain accurate operational records in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Complete utility locates and perform meter reads and re-reads as required.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair water lines, sewer lines, pumps, valves, and mechanical or electrical equipment within the scope of the position.
  • Coordinate with outside contractors when specialized repairs or services are required.
  • Monitor wastewater collection systems, respond to flow issues, and assist with clearing blockages to maintain proper system performance.
  • Operate and maintain treatment plant equipment, including a 3 MGD activated sludge facility and belt press.
  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with established operating procedures and maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe facilities, equipment, and work areas.
  • Follow all safety policies and utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing job duties.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure dependable utility operations and high-quality service.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in industrial or environmental operations and maintenance, preferably in water and/or wastewater operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Active Louisiana State Department of Health Wastewater Collection Class III and/or Wastewater Treatment Class III certification is required.
  • Valid Louisiana driver's license is required.
  • Strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, system operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to operate treatment plant equipment, including a belt press.
  • Ability to perform mechanical repairs and basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance manuals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required under Louisiana operator certification standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, and use hands to perform maintenance and operational tasks.
  • Ability to regularly lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely work around moving mechanical equipment, electrical components, and other industrial hazards.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing job duties.
  • Ability to work in environments where noise levels may occasionally be loud.
