Primary Objective of Position
The Lead Program Manager oversees the Program Management function and directs 2–3 program managers or project coordinators. This role is responsible for leading cross-functional product development initiatives from concept through launch within a structured stage-gate environment. The Lead Program Manager ensures operational excellence across all programs by providing guidance, coaching, and oversight to their team while driving schedule adherence, resource alignment, risk mitigation, and consistent execution across vehicle development programs.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Functional Leadership & Team Management
- Lead the Program Management function and supervise 2–3 program managers/project coordinators.
- Provide coaching, performance management, and skills development to team members.
- Standardize program management practices, documentation, and reporting across all projects.
- Allocate programs, resources, and workload across the team to ensure optimal execution.
Program & Portfolio Leadership
- Oversee execution of multiple product development programs across vehicle platforms.
- Drive alignment on scope, schedule, cost, and risk across cross-functional teams.
- Serve as an escalation point for program-level obstacles and major risk decisions.
- Ensure adherence to the stage-gate development process from concept through post-launch review.
Stage-Gate Process Governance
- Lead gate review preparation, ensuring consistent quality and completion of deliverables.
- Facilitate milestone planning and decision-making forums.
- Implement process improvements and ensure compliance with PMO standards.
Communication & Executive Reporting
- Provide consolidated program updates to senior leadership.
- Create and deliver executive-level presentations for program reviews.
- Serve as the primary interface for critical internal and external stakeholders.
Industry-Specific Execution
- Guide execution on vehicle systems including interior, exterior, electrical, and chassis components.
- Ensure all programs comply with FMVSS, RVIA, and other applicable standards.
- Oversee prototype builds, pilot production activities, and launch readiness.
Continuous Improvement & PMO Development
- Identify and implement improvements to project execution and resource efficiency.
- Recommend enhancements to stage-gate processes and PMO tools.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or related field.
- Minimum 5+ years experience in project or program management.
- Experience in automotive, heavy truck, RV, or similar complex manufacturing preferred.
- Proven ability to lead project teams and mentor direct reports.
- Demonstrated expertise with stage-gate product development frameworks.
- Strong understanding of vehicle systems and associated development lifecycles.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with project management tools such as MS Project, Smartsheet, or Jira.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
