**Job Summary

**

The Mechanical Designer is part of a multi-disciplinary design team developing advanced laser range finders and laser designators for use in military airborne, maritime and ground vehicle applications. Manages large, complex project initiatives of substantial importance to the organization, while working with and providing guidance to the team. Must be capable of devising solutions to complex engineering problems both independently and by soliciting input from other technical subject matter experts across the organization.

The Mechanical Design Engineer works independently as well as with other stakeholders to provide technical direction that will drive the success of all programs. This typically includes working closely with internal and external customers while guiding our team. May be personally responsible for portions of the design and documentation efforts.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

**

  • Design specialized systems and components using SolidWorks collaborating with R&D team to generate 3D models, 2D manufacturing prints and bills of materials (PDM)

  • Research and analyze data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.

  • Research, plan, design, and provide guidance to other engineers for mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.

  • Analyze, design and test products or systems such as instruments, controls, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.

  • Ability to serve as a GD&T SME for the organization.

  • Proficiency in preparing conceptual models and design review materials. Understanding of mechanical analysis requirements and techniques used for initial sizing and design verification.

  • Plan and possibly direct engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.

  • Detail-oriented and able to perform Peer Reviews of other engineers’ designs and drawings.

  • Follows projects from concept through production.

  • Works with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment.

  • Work is performed within set boundaries with minimal direct supervision.

  • Implements operating procedures and provides technical information about mechanical products.

  • Follows strategic direction set by Program and functional leadership.

  • Reads, interprets and creates technical drawings and computer-generated reports.

  • Research, analyze, design and evaluate existing mechanical products and equipment.

  • Travel (10 - 20%) as required to meet critical schedule milestones.

**REQUIRED CAPABILITIES

**

  • U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain US security clearance.

  • Ability to work additional hours to meet customer and schedule requirements.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide array of professional levels and functions.

  • Familiarity with basic machining.

  • Knowledge and ability to operate an NC mill.

  • Experience with opto-mechanical designs.

  • Proficiency in non-conforming material review of root cause / corrective action and disposition instructions.

  • Ability to create and guide the development of structure designs including structure assemblies, component installations, and bracket designs that conform to requirements documents. Ability to assist in requirements verification of those designs.

  • Experience with GD&T application and interpretation

  • Proficiency with hands-on engineering support of manufacturing.

  • Experience with preparation of estimates for design tasks.

  • Ability to prepare or lead the preparation of part lists.

  • Ability to work in a small organization with a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work effectively with other design disciplines as well as manufacturing to create design solutions that address often conflicting requirements.

  • Knowledge of engineering change document preparation and impact assessments.

**EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

**

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 9 years or Graduate Degree and minimum of 7 years of prior relevant experience or equivalent combination of experience and education

  • 8+ years’ experience in the development of electromechanical packaging, design, analysis and environmental testing in the defense market.

  • 8+ years of mechanical design experience

  • 6+ years recent experience with SolidWorks

  • 6+ years’ experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis reports.

  • 5+ years’ experience with CAD software

  • 5+ years’ experience with manufacturing methods and design for manufacturability
