Position Title: Lead Machinist

Classification: Hourly (non-exempt)

Reports To: Machine Shop Supervisor

Summary/Objective

The Lead Machinist is a hands-on, working lead responsible for performing advanced machining operations while providing technical direction and day-to-day workflow coordination within the machine shop. This role serves as a subject matter expert to support safety, quality, and productivity goals, ensuring efficient execution of work and adherence to established processes.

The Lead Machinist sets the standard through technical expertise, strong work ethic, and consistent adherence to company policies, while supporting continuous improvement and skill development across the team.

Essential Functions

  • Perform advanced setup and operation of CNC and manual machines including mills, lathes, grinders, and specialty equipment to produce precision parts.
  • Interpret complex blueprints and GD&T requirements; make program edits and adjust machining parameters to ensure part quality and process efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and quality issues; identify root causes and implement practical solutions with minimal supervision.
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily workflow on the floor to support efficient production and on-time delivery.
  • Serve as a technical resource to machinists by providing guidance, training, and support on setups, operations, and problem-solving.
  • Monitor work in process to ensure conformance to quality and productivity expectations; address issues as they arise.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to improve processes, optimize tooling/fixturing, and resolve production challenges.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant work environment; identify and report unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to reduce scrap, improve efficiency, and lower production costs.
  • Communicate effectively with the Supervisor and team members regarding priorities, production status, and issues impacting performance.
  • Other job duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • At least 1 year of formal or informal leadership experience preferred.
  • Formal machining training or certifications preferred.
  • Strong safety record and consistent attendance history required.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods standing, bending, and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual acuity for reading prints, operating machines, and inspecting parts.
