The pay range is $132,000.00 - $238,000.00

As a Lead Engineer, you serve as the technical anchor for the engineering team that supports a product. You create, own and are responsible for the application architecture that best serves the product in its functional and non-functional needs. You identify and drive architectural changes to accelerate feature development or improve the quality of service (or both). You have deep and broad engineering skills and are capable of standing up an architecture in its whole on your own, but you choose to influence a wider team by acting as a “force multiplier”.

About Tax Technology:

The Taxes, Fees & Finance Enablement team builds, scales, and maintains the technology that enables Target to accurately calculate, manage, report, and comply with tax and fee obligations across the enterprise. We process taxes and fees across Target's sales channels, supporting high transaction volumes and complex data across stores, digital, procurement, finance, and other enterprise systems.

For every item scanned or added to a cart within the Target ecosystem, our technology helps determine the appropriate taxes and fees based on the item and applicable jurisdiction. Our capabilities support:

• Item taxability, tax rates, and fees across Target's sales channels

• Sales and Use Tax compliance, reporting, and audit defense

• Guest tax-exempt status and associated compliance obligations

• Tax requirements for indirect procurement

• Property and Income Tax processes, including fixed asset data

• Centralized Tax data and reporting capabilities and tax technology needs for key enterprise initiatives

Your impact:

As a Lead Engineer on Taxes, Fees & Finance Enablement team, you will shape the architecture and technical direction of critical applications and services across Target's Tax Technology landscape. You will work with high-volume transactional systems, complex data flows, third-party tax platforms, and enterprise integrations while helping modernize existing applications and architecture.

You will partner with Tax, Finance, Product, and engineering teams to ensure our systems provide timely, complete, accurate, and reliable tax information. You will improve resiliency and scalability, incorporate appropriate controls, and make technology decisions with lifecycle management and total cost of ownership in mind.

Core responsibilities:

• Set technical direction and own architecture for Tax applications and services

• Own capabilities end to end, from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and production support

• Design scalable, resilient, secure, and supportable solutions across applications, integrations, and data flows

• Lead modernization and improve system performance, reliability, and production stability

• Evaluate new technologies and lead or contribute to proofs of concept, architecture and design reviews, and code reviews

• Partner with Tax, Finance, Product, and engineering teams to align technical decisions with business and compliance needs

• Mentor engineers, share best practices, and grow engineering and domain knowledge across the team

• Participate in team ceremonies, including daily stand-ups and sprint planning

Technology environment:

Relevant experience with the following technologies is recommended; experience with comparable enterprise technologies is also valuable.

• Backend: Java, Groovy, Kotlin

• Frameworks: Spring Boot

• Databases: Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch

• Data and integration: Kafka

• CI/CD: Git, Vela, Ansible

About you:

• 4-year degree or equivalent experience

• 7+ years of software development experience with at least one full cycle implementation

• Experience designing highly scalable distributed systems & event-driven architectures

• Strong understanding of application architecture, system design, distributed programming, data structures, and modern engineering practices

• Experience providing technical leadership across complex applications, integrations, and data flows and influencing technical direction

• Experience integrating packaged or third-party solutions with enterprise applications

• Communicates and coordinates with project team, partners, and stakeholders

• Demonstrates expertise in analysis and optimization of systems capacity, performance, and operational health

• Familiarity with current and emerging technologies and the ability to evaluate and apply them appropriately

• Ability to mentor engineers, establish engineering best practices, and drive engineering excellence

• Commitment to maintaining technical and domain knowledge through formal training and self-directed education

Nice to have:

These are helpful, but not required:

• Familiarity with enterprise tax platforms such as Vertex or similar technologies

• Front-end experience with technologies such as React and Redux

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
