Senior CNC Machinist / Programmer – 2nd Shift Lead

Location: Lapeer, MI

Shift: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM, with the option of extended 10-hour shifts until 2:00 AM

Overview

Evolution Tool is seeking an experienced Senior CNC Machinist / Programmer and Shift Lead to join our team in Lapeer, MI. This role is ideal for a highly skilled machinist with strong CNC programming abilities, extensive hands-on machining experience, and the leadership skills to guide a team through complex machining projects.

The ideal candidate can independently program, set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC machines while maintaining high standards of precision, quality, and efficiency. Experience machining complex components, tooling, fixtures, or aerospace-related parts is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Program CNC machines independently using G-code, M-code, and applicable CAD/CAM software.

• Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs to achieve accurate, efficient machining results.

• Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC machines, including selecting appropriate tooling, workholding, and machining strategies.

• Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications to ensure dimensional accuracy.

• Lead and coordinate second-shift machining activities to maintain workflow, quality, and project deadlines.

• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to machinists, helping resolve programming, setup, and machining challenges.

• Inspect machined components using precision measuring instruments and verify conformance to specifications.

• Identify and implement improvements to machining processes, tooling, cycle times, and overall efficiency.

• Collaborate with engineering and other departments to resolve machining challenges and meet project requirements.

• Maintain accurate machining documentation and ensure equipment and work areas remain clean, organized, and safe.

• Work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take ownership of machining quality and shift responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of hands-on CNC machining experience.

• Demonstrated experience independently programming CNC machines, including the ability to create, modify, and troubleshoot programs.

• Strong understanding of G-code, M-code, machining principles, cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and workholding.

• Experience with CAD/CAM programming software.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.

• Experience setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC machining equipment.

• Strong understanding of precision measurement tools and quality inspection procedures.

• Previous leadership, mentoring, or team-lead experience preferred.

• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.

• Ability to work independently while coordinating and supporting other machinists.

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or machining certifications preferred.

Work Schedule

• Standard shift: 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM.

• Extended shift option: 4:00 PM – 2:00 AM when working a 10-hour shift.

• Candidates must be comfortable working afternoon/evening hours and extending their shift as needed based on the work schedule.
