Job Overview:

Summary:


The Lathe/Grinder Operator is responsible for setting up and operating standard lathe, grinder, and CNC machine tools in a safe, efficient, and quality-focused manner. This role requires the ability to read and understand blueprints and written specifications, use machinist hand tools and measuring instruments, and apply shop mathematics to machine parts accurately.


The operator works with various metals and understands the appropriate speeds and feeds required for machining. This position is responsible for shaping metal bars, forgings, and castings to precise dimensions and finishes while maintaining high productivity and minimizing rejected parts. The operator must be able to operate one or more machines as needed to meet production and quality standards.


Shift/Working Hours: Monday through Thursday, night shift is 3:30 PM to 2:00 AM, with overtime as needed from 3:30 PM to 4:00 AM.


Responsibilities:


  • Set up and operate standard lathe, grinder, and CNC machine tools.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and written specifications.
  • Use shop mathematics to support accurate machining.
  • Skillfully use machinist hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Shape metal bars, forgings, and castings to precise dimensions and finishes.
  • Work with various metals and apply proper speeds and feeds during machining.
  • Operate one or more machines to meet production schedules, quality standards, and productivity expectations.
  • Inspect work to ensure parts meet print specifications and quality requirements.
  • Load and unload parts from machines, change tools, and set up machinery as needed.
  • Read, write, and understand safety warnings, work instructions, and required paperwork.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatchers, inspectors, and other team members.
  • Learn and retain knowledge of machine controls, machine functions, crane controls, measuring instruments, blueprints, and symbols.
  • Maintain punctuality and regular attendance to support manufacturing schedules.


Requirements:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of lathe experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to set up and operate standard lathe and CNC machine tools.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and written specifications.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics.
  • Ability to use machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Familiarity with machining various metals, including proper speeds and feeds.
  • Ability to meet production and quality standards with minimal rejected parts.


Preferred Experience/Skills:


  • Experience operating one or more machines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience shaping metal bars, forgings, and castings to precise dimensions and finishes.
  • Ability to work efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Long-term knowledge retention for machine controls, machine functions, crane controls and functions, measuring instruments, blueprints, and symbols.


Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:


  • Ability to lift 5 to 60 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to reach, bend, and twist to secure parts in the machine, measure and inspect work to print, change tools, set up machinery, and load or unload parts.
  • Ability to stand 40% to 60% of the time to load, unload, inspect parts, review prints, and visually observe machine functions.
  • Ability to walk throughout the plant to change machines, retrieve blueprints, obtain parts, and complete other job-related tasks.
  • Ability to see, read, and write in order to understand safety warnings and complete required paperwork.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisors, dispatchers, inspectors, and other team members.
