The lab technician shall receive and test samples that routinely arrive at the Technical Laboratory located in Garner, North Carolina. This AASHTO R18 accredited laboratory primarily focuses on physical quality testing of aggregates. Test samples are generally derived from crushed rock cores and finished aggregate products from operations. The technician shall be capable of independently performing required aggregate tests and assisting with other testing or laboratory activities as requested by the laboratory supervisor. The technician shall enter test data or collected measurements into the laboratory’s Materials Testing System (MTS). Work shall be performed with minimal supervision after training is completed and competency is demonstrated. Necessary professional certifications such as those offered by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) are required for the position; aggregates testing certifications will be the initial and primary focus of this position.
Responsibilities:
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment at all times
Must have exceptional attention to detail and able to act accordingly
Professionally interact with other laboratory personnel as well as internal and external customers
Unload delivery vehicles using a hand-truck and/or forklift
Notify the lab supervisor of received samples for logging in the MTS
Independently perform laboratory tests on aggregates
Assist the lab Supervisor with laboratory testing of concrete and asphalt as needed
Enter and submit test results to the laboratory supervisor via the MTS
Assist in the standardization and maintenance of all laboratory equipment
Notify the laboratory supervisor whenever supplies and/or equipment are needed
Available to work overtime and on weekends and/or holidays, when required
Perform other related duties as assigned by the laboratory supervisor
Some limited travel may be required
Qualifications and Skills:
Minimum 1 year of related experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, additional education is a plus
Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English
Must have working knowledge of calculators and computers, basic computer skills in Excel and Word and capable of learning the MTS and StonemontQC
Must be able to attend and fulfill the requirements of professional certification programs such as those offered by the American Concrete Institute (ACI)
Forklift certification required, or able to obtain within one (1) year
Physical Requirements:
Must be capable of performing duties while wearing appropriate PPE including eye, ear, dust protection, gloves and fall protection
Must be capable of lifting fifty (50) pounds on a routine basis
Work tasks require extensive standing throughout a normal day
Must be able to bend, stoop down, and/or kneel while performing some tests
Good manual dexterity and physical coordination are needed
