Job Title: Laboratory Technician –Temporary Part Time

Location: Friendship, NY

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

Position Summary:

Along with necessary technical skills, technicians must have a positive customer service attitude, display team orientation to their work and have the ability to clearly communicate lab information to production and management.

The quality and safety of our products depend upon the lab technician’s ability to perform their responsibilities in a proper way. As such, they have a key role in the plant’s food safety and quality programs. A high level of attention to detail that will yield accurate work is required. Required character strengths include honesty and integrity, a high level of self-motivation, good communication skills, and a team-oriented work approach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be familiar with all product specifications for the tests being performed.
  • Responsible for all analytical and microbiological testing on incoming raw milk, ingredients, and finished product.
  • Perform in-process testing during product batching and processing.
  • Perform environmental monitoring such as air exposures and environmental swabs.
  • Preparation of reagents and media for all testing.
  • Test and adjust pH of dressing tanks.
  • Identify out-of-standard test results, perform any necessary retesting, and report any deviations to appropriate persons.
  • Required to be knowledgeable and proficient at performing all state and internal required control programs and equipment checks to meet regulatory guidelines, as well as plant HACCP and SQF requirements.
  • Technicians need to be familiar with procedures for checking equipment calibration and know how to correct for calibration deviations.
  • Good use of time is to be made during slow times on items such as cleaning, control programs, project work, and media preparation.
  • Responsible for cleaning lab equipment and the lab facility.
  • Provide technical and testing support for R&D projects, production trials, plant troubleshooting efforts, and any other areas as requested.
  • May be asked to gather data and/or compile reports of various data.
  • Will support and carry out responsibilities related to plant food safety and quality systems as required by regulatory requirements and plant programs, including SQF and 3rd Party audit programs.
  • All work is to be performed in accordance with company GMP and safety guidelines, as well as state lab guidelines.

Qualification/Requirements:

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to groups of customers and/or associates of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to troubleshoot, apply judgment, and implement solutions to problems.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls. Talk, hear, taste, and smell.
The employee must regularly move or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move 50 pounds. Also, lift 5 lbs. above shoulder height.
Reach with hands and arms above shoulder height.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
The employee may be required to climb ladders and/or balance.

Work Environment:

Exposed to wet and humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and vibration.
May work with or be exposed to cleaning chemicals and lab chemicals requiring personal protective equipment (e.g., goggles, gloves, apron, rubber boots).
Noise level in the work environment may be loud and requires wearing hearing protection.
Occasionally exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat.

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time position with a 6-month term from the date of hire.
- Minimum of 24 hours per week
- 2nd Shift: 1:30 PM – 10:00 PM
- Weekend availability is required
- May be asked to work additional hours and days, as needed
