Permanent Part Time Associate Technician

Lab Technician – Part-time – 20-29 hours/week

Ideal: 3 days/8 hours, but have flexibility

This part time associate research technician position focuses on preparing and executing ruminal in vitro, ruminal in sacco, and metabolism research experiments. The position is part of the Dairy Feed R&D team and is located at the Center for Animal Metabolism and Microbiology (CAMM) at the Purina Animal Nutrition Research Facility in Gray Summit, MO.

This position assists with research projects related to innovation and new product development. This includes weighing samples and substrates, preparing media, performing in vitro and in sacco experiments with mixed ruminal microorganisms, cleaning and preparing labware, collecting research samples and data, participating in safety trainings and maintaining safety equipment, drying and grinding samples, and data entry.

Preparing and analyzing animal tissues and associated materials including rumen content, milk, feed, urine, feces, and blood samples is frequently required. Other responsibilities may include lab maintenance, cleaning animal spaces, purchasing supplies, preparing reports, and feeding and caring for cows and steers.

Candidates will need to be able to work well both on a small team and independently with little supervision. Hours can be mutually agreed upon. An ideal candidate would have availability to work two or three 8-hour shifts on weekdays from 8 am to 4:30 pm, ​with periodic shifted hours (including weekend work) on a project-specific basis. Part-time employees can work up to 29 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rumen content sample collection.

  • Preparing for and executing ruminal in vitro, ruminal in sacco, and metabolism research experiments.

  • Collecting, processing, and analyzing animal tissues and associated materials including rumen content, milk, feed, urine, feces, and blood samples.

  • Weighing samples and substrates

  • Preparing media

Required Qualifications/Education:

  • High school diploma

  • Ability to follow instruction and SOPs

  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft office

Preferred Qualifications/Education:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

  • Associate’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience

  • Analytical Chemistry experience (GC, HPLC, TLC, ELISA, etc.)

  • Experience working with large animals
