The position exists to support lab experimentation associated with the conceptualization, synthesis development and transfer of lab scale procedures to the engineering team for scale up development. The incumbent will be involved in lab operations including chemical synthesis, purification and analysis. The candidate will be required to function effectively independently and in work teams. The position is responsible for safe operation of their lab unit and thorough documentation of observations and results.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Laboratory support of synthesis, new product development, analytical and characterization of chemical compounds for various applications. Work focuses on handling of high-pressure reactor for various chemical processes including hydrogenation, organic synthesis using standard laboratory glassware, separation, isolation and purification including typical methodologies such as distillation, filtration, crystallization, etc. Need a strong EH&S focus and recognition of lab hazards. This area of work includes participation in design hazard reviews to ensure safe lab operations.
  • Analysis of chemical samples using various techniques including but not limited to gas chromatography, spectroscopy, rheology and titrations
  • Mechanical construction of laboratory setups and equipment including working with compression fittings and small gauge tubing
  • Assisting our engineering team with plant and pilot plant scale up and facilitate technology transfer
  • Documentation of laboratory results, collection of lab data, basic calculations and interpretation of results
  • Active participation in lab safety program including training, laboratory inspections, job safety analysis, identification of hazard potentials and task observations


REQUIREMENTS

  • BS with a Minimum of 1 year of experience including working in a chemical laboratory environment or pilot plant operation (can include academic laboratory as part of independent research or degree program) or Associate’s degree in chemistry or similar field with 2 years of experience
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office. Some knowledge of laboratory control systems and analytical instrumentation is a plus.
