JOB SUMMARY

A Lab Supervisor is responsible for the first line management of lab engineering technicians, other test lab employees, test lab equipment, and lab facilities. They develop and maintain test processes, train and develop technicians, and produce test results. The supervisor monitors and maintains any certifications for the lab and subsequent team.

RESPONSIBILITIES / SKILLS

  • Provide instructions and guidance to subordinates and maintain continuing surveillance over operations and activities to complete test plans within a timely manner.
  • Participate as a member of the department's management team in the development of strategies, plans, and improvement initiatives.
  • Formulate and guide the implementation of long and short-range plans, policies and programs pertaining to product testing.
  • Prioritize, evaluate and schedule incoming work assignments for technicians and make necessary adjustments in work force to satisfy these requirements. Evaluate employee utilization and provide guidance to department supervisors to increase efficiency and quality of testing and prototypes.
  • Select, develop and motivate staff to a high level of competence capable of meeting current and future testing needs. Motivate and encourage employee development.
  • Perform administrative activities necessary for the effective management of direct reports, including pay administration, setting goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating, and measuring the work performed.
  • Effectively communicate and present test results, test methods, and test capabilities to engineering, product management groups, and management.
  • Coordinate the design and construction of test systems and equipment.
  • Assess the equipment needs of the lab to support current and future testing needs.
  • Manage 3-6 direct reports.
  • Perform testing to support workload, in addition to the duties above.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5-7 years of functional experience in engineering test lab environment is preferred. Well-developed managerial skills combined with technical expertise along with a working knowledge of planning is essential for success in this position.
  • 2 years experience as supervisor preferred.
  • Written and verbal proficiency in English.
  • AS in Engineering minimum is preferred. Equivalent experience in technical and personnel management areas is adequate.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills: able to read and understand technical reports, specifications, and office correspondence.
  • Proficient in general computer use utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and a wide range of vendor software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, and reach.
  • Must regularly handle and feel small objects or controls.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at times.
